    Hello estesbob!

I'd certainly want to know about applications after upgrading Mac OS X on the computer.  For iPhoto and Aperture, this article has what we want, Updating from iPhoto to Photos for OS X - Apple Support, since updating to OS X El Capitan would put the newer Photos app on the computer for pictures.

Fortunately, there is this in the article:

Using iPhoto and Aperture after you migrate to Photos

iPhoto — and Aperture, if you downloaded it — remains on your system in the Applications folder, and you can continue to use it. If you open iPhoto or Aperture after you upgrade to Photos, you’ll be asked if you want to open your library there or in Photos.

Any changes or edits you make in iPhoto or Aperture aren't reflected in Photos. And any changes or edits you make in Photos will not be reflected in iPhoto or Aperture.

    Regards.

You will need iPhoto v.9.6.1, and Aperture 3.6 (minimum) for El Capitan use. Neither of these are on Apple support download servers, though if you are on 10.8.5, you might try signing into the OS X App Store on Mountain Lion, and press the option key as you select Purchases. See if the App Store will offer to update these products to current versions — before you install OS X El Capitan.
