Q: Mac Pro 2013 Randomly Restarting Problem

Hello,

Here's my problem: I've got a Mac Pro Late 2013 (6-core, 16gb ram, FirePro D500, running OS X 10.10.5 with a WACOM Cintiq 21-UX as my only display) that has, for the last month or so been randomly restarting itself.

There are days where it will do it maybe three or four times, and then days where it won't do it at all. Also there are times where it runs fine for hours but then if I shut the Mac Pro down, it will crash and reboot. Sometimes, it will freeze up momentarily application-wise (but the cursor will move but won't do anything) before it reboots but usually the screen just goes black and then it reboots without any warning. I always get the black screen with the "Your computer has restarted... press any key" and of course it generates a crash report that I submit to Apple each time (which I will post the most recent one below as well.) I have done safe boot up, reset PRAM, booted in single user mode, everything that I have found online to do that is recommended. But nothing seems to have done anything to help.

The Cintiq is hooked up via a DVI to Thunderbolt adapter. I also have Mercury Elite Dual Pro RAID enclosure hooked up via Thunderbolt normally. There are times when I think that there is an issue with the RAID enclosure and the Mac Pro but can't be sure. Like there is an issue with the Thundebolt ports. I've tried switching the the cables around but it hasn't seemed to have made any difference. This also all seems to have coincided with the last OS X update where I also updated the WACOM Cintiq driver (which i since downgraded to the older driver). Is this all just a software conflict issue?

I did find an Apple Support thread where someone indicated that a Kernal Panic could cause all this but then this also seems to be similar to what I found was the issue with the Macbook Pros that had graphics card issues a while back.

Anyway, here's a crash report if it helps and thank you for any help that anyone can send my way!

It appears you have a hardware problem with one or both of the GPUs.

    Thank you for your reply,

I was thinking that was the issue, do you know if there has been a wider problem with these graphics cards failing? I will say though, that when I've run the system diagnostics and hardware check it comes back saying that everything is fine. But of course it's not. Is this the part in the crash report that seems to indicate them failing: <rdar://problem/15746463>"@/SourceCache/AppleGraphicsControl/AppleGraphicsContr ol-3.10.25/src/AppleMGPUPowerControl/kext/AMPCPowerManagement.cpp:512

Do you know if the Thunderbolt ports are connected to specific cards? I know they are grouped in pairs as far as how they are powered (the top two left as one pair, the top two right as another and the bottom two as a third pair).

    Thanks!

I have a 2013 MP with the D300's and have no problem.

In the 2013 MP one graphics card does computations while the other card drives all connected displays. If you go to System Profiler you can see that

You have duet display driver loaded and you are having graphics crashes. Remove duet display driver while you debug.

Thanks! I think this has solved my problem. After removing duet display completely, and restarting, the diagnostic chime suddenly became louder upon restart, which I take as a good sign. The next couple of days will tell me for sure.

    Hello,

did you try to reinstall your Mac os x?

    Suggestion: write an OS X (any version) on a USB Flash Drive or DVD and before installing the OS X press and hold these keys in a same time;

    Command+Option+p+r

then your computer will restart after that press and hold OPTION key to see the Flash drive or dvd os x and follow the instructions to install your os x. I hope your problem would be resolve.

Note: before anything make sure your data's backed up.

    Good luck

    Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I haven't reinstalled OS X yet, but I plan to as soon as I can just to refresh it all. The problem is time right now, since if I do it, I will have to also reinstall all my software since I don't want to restore from Time Machine. Removing the duet display as suggested in an earlier reply seems to have solved the problem though. But a fresh install is never a bad thing!  Thanks, I appreciate it!

Is there anything else I should do, to de-bug besides the re-running suggested things like the hardware test and the system diagnostic test? Now that the duet display app and files have been totally removed?
