Q: dropped ipod in water, help

So the first time i dropped my phone in water, there was nothing wrong with it until the next morning. When I took it out of the charging port there was some black stuff on the tip of the lightning cable and the home button wouldn't work. I decided to use the on screen home button  but my ipod still wouldn't charge properly. The only way for it to charge was to push the lightning cable upwards with little force. After about a month, my home button started working again and my ipod would start charging again properly. Soon after, however, my battery died when I was away from home. Once I got home i realized that the prompt (the image of the tip of the lighting cable and a bolt of electricity)  underneath the dead  battery symbol wouldn't disappear once i plugged the charger in, which meant that my ipod wouldn't charge properly again. In the hopes of being able to charge the device, i tried cleaning out the charging port, but that didn't work. While trying turn it on (by trying to hold the power button and the home button simultaneously) I realized that my home button doesn't function properly as well. Furthermore during the process of trying to fix my home button, i think i made it worse ( i twisted the home button a lot). With all these problems i'm pretty sure i either have to get it fixed professionally or replace it. I'm writing this to see if there might be something i can do before spending money.

I am also not a very smart person when it comes to apple products. I would appreciate any advice that might help.

I speculate that the reason that it stopped functioning was because i spilled a little bit of water on it, but i'm not

iPod touch, iOS 9.3.3, im not sure the exact os
