Q: iPad mail opens in read most recent email mode not message list

Whenever I open mail app iPad mini 2 iOS 9.3.4 it iPad mail opens in read most recent email mode not message list.

Restored to factory settings, reset reboot, hold app and quit all to no avail.

    Yes, I believe this is how iPads behave.  iPhones, on the other hand, open in the message list.

     

    Get to the message list by pressing the "<".
