Q: my device cannot be used to receive apple id verification codes

On Settings -> iCloud -> Devices I select my iphone 5 and it says "this device cannot be used to receive apple id verification codes".

I suspect this is the reason why I can't activate iMessage and Facetime.

What can I do to fix this?

iPhone 5, iOS 9.0.2

    Hi.

    Thanks for your reply.

I don't see any devices in my account.

    My menu shows these options:

    Name, ID and Email

    Password and Security

    Addresses

    Phone Numbers

    Language and Contact preferences

I've read that inside Passwords and Security you do get a list of trusted devices for Two-Step verification but I don't want to enable that and I've seen people with Facetime, without this verification enabled.

Maybe the list of devices you refer to is somewhere else?

If you don't register devices for 2 step verification, you can't receive verification codes on them.

    I see.

    My Facetime activation is unsuccessful.

Do you think it has something to do with not being able to receive verification codes from apple?

I've read that part of the Facetime activation process is receiving a verification vía SMS. Is it a different type of verification?

No, it's the same thing, you need to register a device so you can receive a verification message on it.

Ok so back to my previous comment... I've seen people that activate Facetime without having Two-Step verification

How do I fix my "this device cannot be used to receive apple id verification codes" without involving Two-step verification

Where do I register a device without Two-Step verification? I don't see any devices section in my apple id console (it appears in my icloud console though in the Find my devices section)

    Thanks

ł'm not sure if you can still set it up without 2 step verification, but you can't use a device to receive verification messages without them being a trusted device as part of 2 step verification.

HI chuler, I am also having the issue with not being able to activate my FaceTime/iMessage on my iPad. I switched to the 2 step verification and it still doesn't work. just thought I would mention this to you before you switched, I have had this issue with my iPad since I bought it (used). I've tried every solution offered on here and nothing ever works. I've even restored both my iPhone and iPad back to factory settings and had to reload everything over again and my iMessage still doesn't work on my iPad. I'm like at my wits end.

I had the same issue but i solved it!!!!

On your iPhone go to Settings, iCloud, Keychain....then turn it off and turn it on again

    Then choose reset the code

it will ask you for a new code and your phone number

    follow instructions and that´s all!!!!
