Q: GarageBand Loops won't install

I ran an update for GarageBand and now I have absolutely NO loops in the loop browser.

I have tried to reindex the loops after deleting the index file.

I have tried to drag the audio file over to the loop library.

I have checked that I don't have the filter ticked.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled GarageBand.

Still no loops.

I'm running a MacBook Pro 2012 with El Capitan 10.11.1. GarageBand 10.1.2.

I'm reasonably computer literate and can usually solve this kind of stuff following advice from forums and the like. I've drawn blanks everywhere I turn - can anyone help?

Does your Loop Library exist at all?

Check the Loop Library at /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/

If no loops are installed, try to download more loops using the command  "GarageBand > Sound Library > Download all available sounds".

It might be a problem with corrupted preferences files:

if parts of the user interface do not work, it frequently helps to remove the preferences files and to clear the caches:

Quit GarageBand. Remove these folders from your user library, if they exist:

    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.garageband/fsCachedData/

    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.garageband10/

    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.garageband10.plist

    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.garageband10.LSSharedFileList.plist

The user library is the Library folder inside your Home folder, not the Library folder at the toplevel of your system drive.

You user library may still be hidden, as is the default: To make it visible in Mavericks or newer systems:

    • Quit GarageBand .
    • Select the "Home" folder icon (the little house)  in the Finder's sidebar and press the key combination ⌘J to open the "view options". Enable "Show Library Folder".

To make it visible in Lion or later open a Terminal window and enter exactly as written here:

    chflags nohidden ~/Library

Then open the Home folder and open the Library folder inside and navigate to Preferences.

    Hi Leonie,

You are an absolute legend - thank you so much for such a detailed answer.

I've tried everything you suggested, and it still didn't work. I deleted GB and reinstalled but I still don't have any loops (I do have sounds, just not loops).

At least I can use the ipad - I have an arrangement I need done for a performance next week, but I much prefer using the laptop for GB.

I'm not using Logic at all - should I be? I'm not really familiar with it.

I really appreciate your help at any rate.

    Cheers.

I have tried to reindex the loops after deleting the index file.

How did you try to reindex the loops?

In GarageBand 10 the command the reindex the loops is at the bottom of the "Loops" drop down menuin the Loop browser.

Are loops installed in the folder /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/? Have you checked in the Library folder at the top level of our system drive?

This is how I've tried reindexing the loops. Sometimes it thinks for a while but nothing happens.

    The loops are in here:

In my Library folder. They are not in my Home/Library folder though. Should they be in there?

"Have you checked in the Library folder at the top level of our system drive?"

I'm not sure what this means. Is it referring to where they are saved?

    Cheers, PC.
