Q: Macbook Pro shuts down during games

Macbook Pro Retina 15" Early 2013

10,1

SMC: 2.3F35

This doesn't seem to be an overheating issue. It was able to play League of Legends in the past without any issue. Now when the game is loaded the PC will completely shutdown 45 seconds into the game. I am able to rejoin the game after 45 seconds have passed and the macbook will not shutdown past that point and I can play the game.

The problem is on higher graphics games like Left 4 Dead 2, when there are things like fire, the framerate will drop and it will start stuttering, 3 seconds later the PC completely shuts down.

Trying to play CS:GO, the game starts up, the map will load, a few seconds later, macbook shuts down.

Tried resetting SMC, that seemed to help it last a few seconds longer but didn't work.

Do you know what the issue might be? Is this a graphics problem? Would disabling the graphics switching solve anything?

EDIT: I forgot to mention this Macbook Pro was brought into the apple store and they said nothing was wrong with it and they want me to reformat it.

Thank you for any help.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, Other OS, null

Oh I love how they want you to reformat it.  Cheap easy way to find the solution.

Regardless, you should look at each game's official system requirements, and compare with the graphics processing unit (GPU) on your computer.  Recommended system requirements should be observed, not the minimum.  When only minimum requirements are observed, the game may not perform correctly.  The System Profiler will tell you what you have.   Many MacBooks have dual GPUs, and controlling them is done via the Energy Saver:

Set graphics performance on MacBook Pro - Apple Support

Changing this setting may help your game work or not.

You can also run the hardware test on your Mac in extended mode, booting with the 'D' key Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support

If unrevealing, either the RAM, or the GPU could be a problem.   But that's where Apple wants to try to reformat it.

A simpler less intrusive way than reformatting, is getting an external drive and just installing a blank operating system on it, and the game alone.  That will reveal if the problem is hardware or software.

You should anyway have a backup of your data, and preferably two*:

    Thank you for the advice^^

I might have to bring this back to the Apple store.

    Thanks!
