Q: Clicked Restart, Not Restarting??

I need help! A few days ago, chrome kind of SPAZZED out on me and two icons appeared in my dock.. I was able to quit one, but the other one was stuck on not responding and I couldn't force quit the application. I also tried quitting from activity monitor, but the app didn't even show up. For a few days I just tried to ignore the problem and used safari for my browsing needs. This morning I decided I needed to do something about it, so I went to restart from the Apple Menu. However, NOTHING HAPPENED. I waited for about 10 minutes and.... Nothing happened. So I went to hold down the power button to force it to shut down, but a message popped up saying "your computer is already restarting." I tried it again a few minutes later and got the same result. Now I have absolutely no idea what to do. I tried to open safari, and it immediately quit. For now, I just put the computer to sleep, which seems to be doing fine. PLEASE HELP. WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE?

If you hold down the power switch, does the computer eventually shut down? If you wake the computer from sleep, is computer operation normal?

The computer wakes normally, but I cannot open any applications. As soon as I try they immediately quit. I figure this is because the computer is trying to restart so it's quitting all applications, but for some reason, the chrome icon is stuck and it can't quit out of it. I will try holding the power button longer....
