Q: Help - MacBook case buckled, what do I do?

Hey

 

last week I picked up my MacBook and noticed that the bottom was all buckled and warped and the lid wasn't lying down straight - see pics below. it looks to me like its maybe overheated? But I have no idea so i was wondering if this had happened to anyone else? And what should I do now? I've tried to look online and it seems that if its a problem

with the battery I shouldn't turn it on. Any help & advice would be greatly appreciated!

The battery has swollen, and it looks like it pretty much destroyed your computer. There is nothing you can do to fix this at home. Make a Genius Bar appointment with an Apple retail store or contact an Apple Authorized Service provider for their evaluation. A first-person look may allow them to see what if anything is salvageable.

 

Is the the original battery or did you get a replacement battery from someone other than Apple?

    It's the original battery - but I've had this laptop for about 6 years so I've been planning to replace it, I suppose this is the push I needed! I'll take it in to my local Apple Store to see what they say but like you say, it does look pretty much destroyed.   thanks for your help

    Dear helie12,

     

    I only now noticed you have a MacBook, not a MacBook Pro (the subject of this forum area). Because yours has a polycarbonate plastic case and not the machined aluminum ones used for MacBook Pros, your chances of salvaging the computer are greatly higher. Plastic case components may spring back close to original shape/dimensions after the offending battery is removed.

     

    Based on the images, probably the most serious case damage is around the trackpad, where the pad looks to have separated from the palmrest area. Howeverm that may not keep the pad from working.

     

    Anyway, getting a professional evaluation is more important now that I've figured our you have a plastic case that may be more easily repaired.
