Q: Can't restore laptop resolution

I have an old 15" Macbook Pro mid-2010. I still mostly run Snow Leopard for day-to-day work.

I hooked up an external monitor and was experimenting with the resolution on the external display. I have used an external display many times before, but without tweaking its resolution.

In the past whenever I have unplugged the external my laptop's internal display defaults right back to its native resolution, which I believe to be 1280x1024.

But since my experimentation with the external's resolution, this is no longer the case. The resolution "reads" 1280x1024 in System Preferences, but the screen is severely "letter-boxed" with large black bands on either side, No amount of clicking on different resolutions and back to 1280x 1024 restores the display properly without the black bans.

I tried zapping the PRAM, thinking that that would restore the internal display's settings. But that did not work. Any ideas?
