Q: Finder constantly going nonresponsive

I have a MacBook Pro (mid 2014 model) running OS X 10.9.5. It's been fine for a couple of years, but suddenly a few days ago, Finder suddenly stopped working properly. It will work for a minute or two tops, and then it goes completely nonresponsive. Clicking on anything within Finder results in a frozen screen that won't update. Sometimes it goes blank, sometimes it just stays frozen on whatever it was showing at that moment, and sometimes, if you move the window around the screen, the Finder window displays bits of the background.

Rebooting the computer doesn't help. If I Force Quit and restart Finder, it works again for a few seconds, but almost immediately freezes up again, so I'm having to Force Quit/Restart constantly to get anything done at all.

I ran Verify Disk, found an error message or two (orphaned blocks, IIRC), and ran through the Repair Disk process. When it was done, it reported that my disk now looked fine, but it didn't fix the Finder problem at all. I also found a suggestion that I delete the file com.apple.finder.plist and restart. That didn't help either.

Any ideas?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Hi cgiauque, please download and run EtreCheck, created by one of own helpers here in ASC. It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information.

This is very probably a adware/malware issue, looks like GenieO.

The etrecheck list will most certainly give all necessary information.

Is this the same thing that's been causing the "Google Earth wants to update" bug? Because I had that happen to me right around the same time this problem started - I forgot to mention that. I started getting requests for my password to update Google Earth, even though I hadn't had it installed for years. I never gave it the password, did a search for "Google Earth", and deleted a browser extension that popped up, and the requests stopped. But I've seen elsewhere that this was some sort of malware going around.

I'll try etrecheck as soon as I can.

Please start your own discussion. Trying to answer several problems in one discussion gets confusing for everyone. A new post would be much more visible.

Quit/uninstall Google Drive. Based on numerous posts, it has a bug in it that is causing major Finder problems.

Uninstall Avast. Its tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit.

    Avast

    Uninstall Avast.

It will come back to normal after that.

Make some more free space on the startup disk.

then post here the the link to the new thread where we can continue.

    Hi Eric,

GoogleDrive also, but a lot more to do in a new thread: Paragon, NTFS MacFuse. And Glimmerblocker is not the right choice to block ads. Adblock, or Ublock is much better.

You may not need to uninstall Google Drive.  I just paused it and the Finder seems to be working fine again.  I hope this gets fixed because I have everything synced through my Google Drive!

Google Drive has been a pain in the a**, already for years.

If you do not want it to run, just don't start it at all: "pausing" serves at nothing.

    You still have to clean:

remove Glimmerblocker and use a "normal" Adblock.

Remove two of the three NTFS drivers.
