Aug 21, 2016 12:03 PM in response to Jean Nby Ralph Johns (UK),Hi,
If you use the Apple Icon menu top left and About this Mac does it show the Serial Number ?
It would be unusual for a "new" computer to have this missing but a refurbished one may have had the Logic/mother board replaced and the Serial Number not put back.

Aug 22, 2016 5:12 AM in response to Ralph Johns (UK)by Jean N,Well, I bought this device from an Apple store, brand new.
I get the little blue and white 'bubble' icon, but it just doesn't work! The menu pops up, I try to sign in, it spins for a looooooong time. Finally, (sometimes) it comes up with "we can't do this, check your connection".

Aug 22, 2016 8:37 AM in response to Jean Nby Lexiepex,15" mid 2009 MacBookPro. Original OS Leopard or (later) SnowLeopard.
Check the internet connection: if you connect to WiFI, hold the Alt(option) key while you click the WiFi icon in the menu bar.
Note the RSSI, Noise and TxRate, and post them here.
It would also help if you post an etrecheck list here: goto etrecheck.com , read on that site, download the etrecheck app, and run it: via the share button (top) you get the list in the clipboard, with paste into your post.

Aug 22, 2016 8:58 AM in response to Lexiepexby Jean N,Thanks, Lexiepex: You do have to know you are dealing with an 85-year old non-nerd! Having said that, here is the info you asked for--I think!
wifi info: RSSI = 33 dBM (but fluctuates constantly); Noise = 90 dBM; TxRate = 300 Mbps
Etrecheck info, copied and pasted herewith: Please note: the Mozy info at the end is always ignored by me since I don't know what it is!

Aug 22, 2016 11:08 AM in response to Jean Nby Lexiepex,Not bad for an 85 year old non-nerd ! There are a lot of friends here that are about that age.
RSSI: -33DB not 33DB, which is a very strong signal, but it should not fluctuate more than 1 or 2 DB !
Noise: -90DB, not 90DB, which is very good also, extremely good even.
TxRate: 300 Mbps which is very strong also.
So internet and WiFi blast you almost out of the room: you need seatbelts !
Now the etrecheck list:
in almost the same order as the list, when I put two !! before it is important (!!!! is extremely important)
1.!! You have not enough free space on your main disk: I recommend to have AT LEAST 15GB free, more is even better !!
2.! You have used BootcampAssistant once and have 6.1 GB spent which is by far not enough to do Windows in: I suggest that you start BootcampAssistant and remove that, only with BootcampAssistant !! this alone brings you to over 13 GB free space !!
3.! In SystemPreferences->Users&Accounts->LoginItems: remove all entries with the minus sign underneath.
then restart.
4.! Uninstall the WesternDigital (WDC) software, counterproductive
5.!!!!!!!! Uninstall CleanMyMac (Macpaw): this is the most horrible tool you can install...!!!!!!
6.!! Uninstall Mozy backup software (SystemPreferences applet), this strangles your Mac as you can see for yourself. Maybe there is a new version.
7. Restart again.
See how it behaves now, make a new etrecheck list and post so that I we can see the result.
Hang on

The System preferences > User and Groups > your account > Login Items -
Whilst Lex says to turn them Off you list both TomTom and Garmin.
Potentially both could be Sat-Nav devices.
Is this the case ? (Garmin do a wider range of handheld stuff as well as Sat-Navs).
If one is for an older device you no longer use I would consider removing that completely (not just it's listing in Login Items)
As mentioned the space is an issue which could have a knock on effect.
The App is called Messages and the Account iMessages.
Saying that iMessages was not login seems perfectly reasonable to me.
To Login you need and Apple ID that is link to iCloud and it's Password.
Since OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion's second update) you have needed the Mac's Serail Number as well to make a Device Specific Login.
After finding out if you have the Serial Number listed I was going to move on the doing a NVRAM reset (Same keys as a PRAM reset if you have a G3 or G4 Mac).
This a sort of fancy Restart that clears some caches you can't do with a basic Restart.
Try Messages again.
It that does not work try a Safe Boot
Re try Messages.
If this has not worked then we have done nearly as much as we can to check your Mac.
There is one last thing.
In Users and Groups above either Enable the Guest Account or create an Admin Account to test with.
Login to this test Account and set up Messages/iMessages with your Login details.
If this works bit it does not work in your normal Account then we have to sort out your Account.
If it does not work the issue is more likely at the server end.
Some of what Lex has started may sort your Account out.
However it is more likely to be Read and Write Permissions in your Home Folder.
IF it is not your account the instructions are quite long on how to get hold of Apple to reset the server end.
In either case post back with the info.

Aug 22, 2016 12:50 PM in response to Ralph Johns (UK)by Jean N,Mr Johns: I cannot figure out whether you agree with Lexiepex or not. In any case, I'll have to print out these complicated instructions and have at them tomorrow.
Are you saying (from your lofty perch of 72,000+ points - advanced standing, I guess) that I should NOT do the manuevers that Lexiepex prescribes?
I'm not savvy enough to comprehend your instructions, I'm afraid.
i do understand about Garmin and TomTom; I should expunge TomTom, if I can.
Meanwhile, I'm curious: do you pronounce it "Rafe"?
Thanks for tackling this.

Aug 22, 2016 12:58 PM in response to Jean Nby Ralph Johns (UK),hi,
I was trying to tread that fine line between saying I would do it differently without saying I would not do it.
EtreCheck is a useful tool.
In your case it has highlighted some things that do need sorting Now - but they also are unlikely to be the cause of your issue.
It is pronounced Ralf like Stephen uses a "ph" as an "f" sound.
The outcome is you need to do the things Lex has led you to discover as well as do things that examine the iMessages issue a bit further.

Aug 23, 2016 1:10 AM in response to Ralph Johns (UK)by Lexiepex,Good morning all.
Let me mingle in:
The issue is iMessage. But my approach is to get the s**t away first to be sure it is not caused by that.
Everything removed from the LoginItems is not deleted (except the s**t) and can be brought back when necessary.
The rest is getting rid of the badware and unnecessary software. It may solve the issue (without knowing exactly what it was perhaps), or it is much easier to find the cause.
So both approaches are seemingly a bit different, but both are a way to solve the issue. Ralph goes more direct at the issue and I clean the road of rubble first.
Have a good day all.

Aug 23, 2016 3:53 AM in response to Lexiepexby Jean N,I like 'cleaning the rubble'; I also want to activate Messages. So, later today, I'll try to take the steps Lexipex suggests (if I can figure out how!)
Not sure s/he will be patient enough, but we'll see!
Thanks to you both.
Later---
