Q: can i reinstall os 10.9

I am on a mac mini running OS 10.9.5  I can not go to El Capitan due to applications I need.  The stem has become unstable.  Can I reinstall 10.9.5 or maybe something below El Capitan?

Thanks for the help

Did you keep the 10.9 installer, or did your Mac ship new with it?

    Is your data backed up?

Get Etrecheck, and copy/paste your results from it here.  We can usually tell what may be amiss, especially if you note what unusual behavior your Mac has?

It was installed when purchased. Data is mostly on external drives, apps on internal.  Some of the apps are going to be very difficult t reinstall however.

The main problem is the system suddenly is not liking my 2 external drives, they mount fine, but when you click on them a window opens, if you click on a file the window only freezes.

i have used disk utility and both disks are ok.

Have you made sure the external drives are still well connected to the MacMini?

I had an issue recently where my iMac was opening my external drives slowly.

Had this problem for a couple of weeks.

I found I had a loose FW connection to my iMac.

    Everything is fine now.

I found external drives can be really slow at Spotlight indexing,  This is a pain if you want Find by content in any Apple applications, however for just plain file searching I use Thomas Tempelmann's Find any file.  Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Spotlight lets you add external drives to Privacy section to avoid being searched by content. You should make sure you have backups of both your data and your applications on a second separate source.  You never know when a drive might fail.  Your setup makes it harder to clone, but transfering data between two interfaces usually works best.  I.e. if your source data is on a USB drive, you can use Firewire or Thunderbolt for your destination drive depending on your available interfaces on your Mac.

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
