Q: Color Picker Eyedropper Size

I have iMac Yosemite (10.10.3). The color picker eyedropper in System Preferences >> Desktop & Screensaver produces a circular selection area that has too large a diameter. This makes it virtually impossible to select the color in a smaller pixel area. Can't seem to find how to reduce the diameter of the eyedropper's selection area. Suggestions please?

The reason there is no means to reduce the circular area of the eyedropper is that it isn't doing the selection. There is a tiny square in the center of the circle that you position over the color to be captured, and then click. It is accurate enough that I can select the black from the middle of any character typed here.
