What makes you think I'm running Avira? I did a search for files named avira and came up blank.

Spotlight can't search in system folders.  Download and run Find Any File to search for the particular file you're interested in.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

OK, I did as you suggested and found some Avira files. Should I just delete them? I definitely can't find any Avira "uninstall" tool on my computer; nor can I locate it for download on the web. Avira is not installed and running on my computer, although it may have been at one time; and some files left on my computer. But I don't see how they could be causing me problems. Nor do I see any help in this discussion for resolving my problems.

Are you suggesting that I have a virus which needs fixing, or that Avira itself is causing problems? Because I don't have Avira or the Uninstall on my computer. There might be some residual Avira files from a deleted application. Do you think those are causing problems? How to fix?

Delete those files.  There are no viruses for Macs and, thus, absolutely no need for any antivirus application to be installed on a Mac.  It's been documented here that some AV software are more destructive to a Mac's performance that any help.

After removing all remnants of that software reboot and see if there's any improvement in performance.  If not, boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode,  and check again for any improvement.

I had similar trouble with my  LaCie d2 TBT2 USB3 connected via Thunderbolt to my iMac. So far I have not had any such trouble, after I swapped out the Thunderbolt cable. The trouble occurred when I used the Thunderbolt cable included with the drive, but not when I used a Thunderbolt cable I bought at the Apple Store. The cable firmware revision is different across the two cables.
