Aug 23, 2016 2:27 AM in response to vour400by Roger Wilmut1,I'm afraid you can't. Apple can't, by law, tell you the ID even if they know what it is, and there is no other way of finding it. As you can't contact the previous owner you will never be able to use the phone. Returning it for a refund, if this is possible, is your only option.

user some degree of security and privacy; most things Apple
are tied into the user and product owner's AppleID.
And having that ID will not assure anyone would be contacted;
on the other hand, someone may try to abuse the access it
may imply, in untoward purposes.
With an Activation Lock on an iDevice that has not been properly
released by the original owner, the device is about useless. If
you bought some product that is locked, try & contact the owner
who may not have known to unlock it before it's sold or gave it away.
