Q: Apple TV Airplay (peer to peer) + MacBook Pro (late 2013) not working, help?

I have a fully updated Apple TV a1469 and a late 2013 MacBook Pro 15" running OS X 10.11.6, but have capped wifi at home and am trying to Airplay movies from my MacBook Pro to my ATV via peer to peer Airplay to save my data. So far I haven't had any luck.

My iOS devices work great, so no issues there.

If my ATV and MacBook Pro are connected to the same wifi I can mirror no problem, the only issue is it uses up the little data cap that I have. It's also a little jittery.

I have successfully done it using my work MacBook Pro Retina (13" Early 2015).

On my late 2013 MacBook Pro 15" the Airplay icon shows up in my toolbar as well as in Quicktime Player, but when selecting to connect to the ATV it says "cannot connect"

Is there any way to do this?

You do have to turn on WiFi and Bluetooth on the computer, but you do not have to connect to the WiFi network. You can (sort of) tell you're using peer-to-peer, because discovery takes a moment after clicking the AirPlay icon.

I'm surprised that your use of local WiFi would have a data cap. I've only heard of caps for internet data. When transferring from computer to ATV, you're not using internet data. Just check the ATV "play from cloud" setting.m

Is your Mac OS up to date? 10.10 is required for peer-to-peer.

What is it that you are mirroring. It may be that the content download is using your data not the mirroring part, in which case it still will if you manage to stream it via bluetooth from the Mac.

    Thanks Diana.

My local data doesn't have a cap, and connecting to the ATV should be totally on my local network, but when mirroring content (already downloaded) from my late 2013 MBP to the ATV my internet cap decreases. Maybe I can test this by removing the connection but keeping the router on?

I don't have this probelem with my newer work MBP.

I'm fully updated on all devices and systems, but I'm wandering now if maybe somewhere through the years I have altered my software on my older mac somehow. All the correct Airplay icons show up etc, it just keeps saying "Can't connect" a short while after clicking.

    Thanks Winston,

    I'm mirroring:

    A) Already downloaded content (which I also tried to plain Airplay via quicktime and iTunes)

    B) Extending my desktop as an additional monitor

On the newer ATV 4, the AirPlay settings include "Play purchases from Cloud", meaning that AirPlay of a local copy will actually stream from the internet, not the local file. You should check for a similar setting on your ATV 3 and disable it. This will certainly affect basic AirPlay, and it can also affect mirroring. If all you see on the TV screen is the video, you may not be mirroring, even if the setting says mirroring. It seems like the Apple software makes its own decisions on this.

Regarding "cannot connect", have you ever experimented with third-party apps for screen casting or screen sharing, such as AirParrot or Duet? These seem to interact badly with AirPlay, and should be fully uninstalled, using the original installer if possible.

Ok so, it seems so long as both the MacBook Pro and the ATV are connected to the same wifi router/network they can make the connection no problem.

If, say, the MPB has wifi switched on but isn't connected to any network that's when the error in connection pops up.

With regards to other screen casting apps, I have only ever used "SplashTop" - I uninstalled it a while back, could this affect the peer to peer connectivity?

    Thanks for the help everyone!

Did you do a full uninstall of SplashTop using the original uninstaller, or did you just delete the files manually? There may be remnants left behind.

When the computer is connected to WiFi, you're not using peer-to-peer AirPlay. When the computer is off the network, have you turned Bluetooth on, and is the computer in range? It should probably be in the same room, at least to start. Also, does your computer have the required version of OS X, 10.10?
