Q: Imported iphoto pics from ext drive to new imac then lost new photos and photos app

Imported iphoto pics from ext drive to new imac then lost new photos that were stored in new "Photos for Mac"

All the original ones from Iphoto are in my new mac now, but still using "iphoto format."... Found the newer ones I had stored in the new "Photos for Mac" format in icloud but can no longer run the new format or get the photos from icloud back into the imac???? I'm confused...I've obviously missed a few steps. Be kind...I'm old!

iMac with Retina 5K display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

iPhoto and Photos are two different applications and they use different libraries.

So, do I understand you correctly: you have both apps, and different photos in the two libraries?

Are you also missing photographs?

Thank you for your interest. Before I imported the iphotos library, I had the new 'Photos' app running fine in my new imac with new photos stored on it. After I imported the iphotos library, when I go to the new icon for 'Photos' it brings up ONLY the iphotos in the old format. The new photos previously in the Photos app, I could find only in icloud...no sign of them or the new 'Photos' app (except for the icon) in my new imac. Hmn ?????

Sounds like you have two Photos Libraries.

Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch Photos. How many libraries are listed?

When I launch....only the old iphotos format and old photos come up. The word "Library" no longer exists! There's zero choice.
Should I download the new "Photos" app from Apple again?
