Q: FCPX 4K Crashes, how to AVOID?

Please someone tell me what size of the FCPX 4K project I can have and what limitation should I look for without CRASHES?

Ever since I started my 4K editing, my computer crashed all the time. I asked FCPX support and was advised to use it until it died. So the day came. I took my dead computer to Apple Store. They replaced the logic board which cost me $595.15 only to take home with the same problem. Second time they wiped the whole hard drive out, clean installed OS and all apps, only for me to have worse crashes. The third time they did extensive hardware test but no problem was found. I suggested that they SHARE my FCPX project to master file and this time they saw the crash with their own eyes. At this point they thought that FCPX was not able to handle my project.

I will have the logic board replaced again. I am sick and tired of the crashes. This time I am willing to start a new project with smaller size. But please some one tell me what exactly the LIMITATION and SIZE my FCPX project can have WITHOUT CRASHES?

I was asked that why I want 4K videos? Because I have this beautiful 4K smart TV that I can copy my picture slide show file so far as large as over 9GB on USB drive and play back smoothly on 4K TV with stunning pictures! That is why.

PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT I CAN DO WITH FCPX FOR 4K EDITING WITHOUT CRASHES?

You help will greatly be appreciated!

    Hi, Tom,

I just want to share with you the great news!

I picked up my iMac from Apple Store yesterday. Under the guidance of Apple Care export, FCPX shared my entire 2 hour 4K slideshow with all my full frame pictures (resolution of 6000X3376), all transitions, titles, and music smoothly, lovely, peacefully, and SUCCESSFULLY to master file!!!

I am SO VERY VERY happy!!!

I don't know if the new FCPX upgrade does the job. Whatever it is, Apple makes it possible for me to enjoy 4K FCPX editing on my iMac!

I would say that Apple product is still by far the better product in many ways. Also, Apple Support people are great, and that is important too.

I like this forum too. I learn a lot from people like you.

    Thank you very much.

    Best Regards,

    Sharon

You upgraded? There hasn't been a new version since the beginning of February.

Great to hear it's working for you.

For your information, FCPX 4K editing can make 2 hours of one project with over 1000 full frame pictures of the resolution of 6000X3376, and all the transitions, titles, and music as you wish on iMac. USB drive formatted using exFat can copy 27GB of a file at once with no problem so far as I did. Since 4K blu-ray recorder is not there yet, USB with 27GB 4K slideshow plays back greatly on 4K smart TV.

    Hi, Tom,

Actually it was OS upgrade that included FCPX something about content. I saw "FCPX" and in a hurry to upgrade, before I read the whole sentence, my finger already clicked 'install'.

When senior FCPX expert walked me through SHARE to master file, he noticed that even when I dragged the picture to the timeline, the picture showed up in library. It should not be that way. That was why my project file was so large.

I think he would correct this problem.

Anyway, my computer is working so far so good.

    Thanks for asking.

DDepending on specifics of the media location and your settings that's the correct behavior. Having the image in the project and the browser doesn't increase the size of the library.
