Boot one of the computers into Target Disk Mode and see it the disk drive is shown on the Desktop of the other computer booted normally. If it is then the cable would be OK. Test further by transferring data back and forth.

Is it a Thunderbolt cable?
A mini displayport cable plugs into a Thunderbolt port but only works for video. A Thunderbolt cable will have a lightening bolt icon on the plug ends
