Q: iPhone 6 plus intermittent unresponsive screen

So a couple days ago, my iPhone 6+ began having intermittent screen responsiveness. First time, I received a phone call and couldn't answer it because the swipe wouldn't work. I turned it off and back on with no luck. I reset it and that fixed it. That was the only issue that day. I the last few days it's becoming more frequent. Today alone I've had to reset it eight times.

What it's doing;

  • touch screen is unresponsive to touch entirely.
  • touch screen responds after a delay
  • I tap an app icon and the app two rows up opens instead.
  • from loch screen-can't answer phone calls or notifications.

Sometimes it just leave it alone and come back to it and it's fine. Sometimes I leave it alone and come back with same result and I have to reset it. Sometimes I reset it once and trying to unlock with touchscreen (because touch ID doesn't work after reset) doesn't work so I reset it twice. It has worked after the second time, so far.

The phone is in perfect condition. Never been dropped. Was updated to 8.3 the day it was released so the issue didn't arise immediately after an update.

Anyone having these issues?

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 8.3

The big question for me is do I pay $200 plus to fix it at this point?  Mine is well over one year Old now. And like the poster above stated, it may happen again.

if you change the screen , it will fix it temprary. this problem is growing fast on iPhone 6 plus as they are aging. there are several articles published today about this specific problem on iPhone 6+

Why was my comment edited? I just referenced a previous post in this thread that had been made months ago.  That post was the only helpful thing in this whole thread and now that's been deleted!  People are coming here looking for answers.

My iPhone 6 Plus got the same problem. The only way I could get into it to get information was to strongly bend the top inch or so of the phone backwards and the touch screen would work. I had to hold the phone strongly bent to get the IMEI number. I took it to an Apple store twice and was told by both employees that it was hopeless and I needed a new phone. They seemed aware of what the problem is, because of the quickness of the diagnosis of it,  and aware of the hopelessness (if that's a word) of it and said I needed a new phone. Warranty was up and it cost me $329.00.

I did some search on the internet.  If you search iphone 6 plus gray bar solved on you-tube, it essentially tells you how to fix the problem.  Also, I realized that if you put pressure on the upper left corner of the phone, the screen will be responsive.  So if you're holding your phone, use your thumb to "push" the upper left corner back (almost like you're bending the phone just ever so slightly on that edge).  It will work!!  This is only temporary, but still doable at this point.

Apple, you know this is a hardware issue.  Yet, you don't issue a recall.

Exactly the same problem. Told it was the logic board and the phone can't be repaired. Apple charged me £240 for a replacement iPhone 6 Plus. It's not good when high end hardware doesn't even make it to the end of the airtime contract! This is a staggeringly brilliant phone. But I still think it ought to last 2 years without developing a logic board fault.

You are correct, that is only a temporary fix; much like those who have had their screens replaced have seen the problem return.  The phone's architecture is its achilles heel, thin form that is easily bent.  The phone is flexing from daily use causing the touch ic chips to gradually unseat from the board.  Thats why there's a noticeable decline in touch screen functionality over time.  Refurbished phones will also have this problem eventually.

I wonder how many iPhone 6 Plus with thick Otterbox cases have this problem.  Probably not much...  I'm also guessing owners with no case or low profile cases have this issue more often.

I have an otterbox case - have been back with the same problem 3 times.  On my 4th iphone 6 plus with the EXACT same issue each time.

I have had the Otter Box the entire time and even this last time a heavy duty metal protector. The problem is design (Apple) defect and/or cheap assembly (Foxcom).  Either way Apple is going to loose in the long run as customers who spend a lot of money on these phones, are upset they don't last the two years of their contracts even. You are on a time roulette.....As a shareholder and long time Apple fan/user...this is troubling!

The no case users probably may or may not encounter as they crack their screens and thus replace the screens which temporary "fixes" the issue....once they wise up and protect their phones this is sure to arise. Come on Apple! The 10th Anniversary iPhone may be dead in the water, if you treat your customers like this....

As long as this issue is small potatoes, Apple will just ignore it. If they get bad press on this touchscreen issue, they MAY address It. Anyone got connections with CNN?

I just wanted to provide a coupe of stats about this thread:

    - I joined in on March 29th with a post #426

    - Right now (August 23rd) we had 851 posts total (this one should be #852)

    - Between #426 and #851 I have received exactly 500 emails informing about new posts.

    - "500 - (851 - 426) = 75" -- 75 posts (or 15% total) have been removed by admins for various reasons.

No bashing, no violations, just information.

I posted about a week about the issue. My phone was no longer under warranty, but Apple DID swap it out at no charge. The technician was very familiar with the issue, so much that while it was flickering during the exchange he knew instinctively how to "fix" it. While I am EXTREMELY happy with the swap, the tech basically told me that if I had the issue again after 90 days then I'd have to pay the $329 to replace (or upgrade).

The kicker though...I asked if there was anything I could do to avoid the issue and he said there wasn't. At first "they" thought it was due to bending (aka user error) b/c the first phones that came in with the problem were very clearly bent. However, as time when on it was clear that was not the full story.

Today I am happy with my again-working phone, however I was planning on passing my phone down to the kids....as I have EVERY OTHER IPHONE/IPAD that's come into our house. So...long term I am bummed since I splurged for the 64g and that holds a lot more entertainment than our existing 16g's.

Also my DH just sent me this:
