Click the AirPlay icon in the menu bar, then choose your Apple TVunder "Connect To AirPlay Display." The icon turns blue when your Macis using an AirPlay display.

the only reason you should ever connect it by usb to a computer is to salvage a crashed firmware it provides no other functionality over usb

to get shared iTunes lib, shared adhoc internet or what have you, you need ethernet or wifi

    Connect it for what purpose?

Home Sharing from iTunes works over wi-fi or ethernet, same for Aiplay from iTunes or Airplay Mirroring.

USB connection really is only for restoring the device if the firmware becomes corrupted.

Hi. You may just need to configure the WiFi connection manually, changing the gateway and DNS addresses. Otherwise, you can buy a cable wherever phone accessories are sold. Be sure to get one that handles data not just power; they often say USB 3.0 these days.
