to get shared iTunes lib, shared adhoc internet or what have you, you need ethernet or wifi

Connect it for what purpose?
Home Sharing from iTunes works over wi-fi or ethernet, same for Aiplay from iTunes or Airplay Mirroring.
USB connection really is only for restoring the device if the firmware becomes corrupted.

Otherwise, you can buy a cable wherever phone accessories are sold. Be sure to get one that handles data not just power; they often say USB 3.0 these days.
