Q: Airport Utility cannot find Airport Express

Hello,

I have an airport Extreme running firmware 7.6.7. Airport utility 6.3.6 and an Airport Express (model A1392). I am accessing my system on a Macbook pro. Also have the app on my iPhone.

My Airport Express and extreme talked to each other and were shown on the Airport utility. However, I had to change my wifi password and network password. After doing so, the Airport extreme restarted. After the restart my Express was no longer recognized by my network. The Express has an amber light and it blinks repeatedly. I cannot connect to the express to address the amber light issue.

I have read many of the postings on the forum. However, I have yet to find a solution. How to do connect the airport utility to the airport express?

Thanks for any assistance you may render,

Airport Extreme (1408), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), Airport Express (A1392)

You changed the WiFi password on the AirPort Extreme......but.....the AirPort Express was already previously programmed to connect using your "old" password.  So, the Express is lost, cannot find the network at all, and does not know what to do.

You can help the AirPort Express by performing a Hard Reset on the AirPort Express to erase the old network settings and passwords, then set up the Express again to connect to your "new" network with the "new" password.

Post back if you are unsure how to do this.

    Bob,

I preformed the Hard reset. Airport Utility saw the express. However, refused to connect to it. I had to connect the express to my Extreme via ethernet. Update the Express to all the new passwords, reconfigure it to extend wifi. Then airport Utility recognized it in Green status as a wifi extender.

    Thanks for your assistance.

It seems counterintuitive, but if you had changed the password on the Express first......then.....changed the password on the Extreme......the Express would have found the new network correctly when the AirPort Extreme restarted.
