Q: Any problems after upgrading to Mountain Lion?

Full OS history:  I have an iMac (early 2009 I think) that came with Leopard.  Only 2 days ago did I get around to upgrading it!  So installed my s/w package of Snow Leopard.  Then purchased Mountain Lion from APP store & installed it today.  Now on OS X 10.8.5

Works great except one problem -- Facebook is messed up!  Most of my 'task buttons' (like the down arrow in upper R-hand corner) don't work!  (Which means I also can't send a HELP msg to FB.)  It seems as though FB doesn't "recognize" my mouse.

It's an Apple plug-in Magic Mouse, Model A1152, EMC No. 2058.  Went to Apple's "support" to see if there was a driver update but it seems they're only available on the wireless versions.

Help!

    Hello Catherine.

While it may not resolve your mouse/FB problem directly, there are a couple of things which you might try.  Your iMac is probably mid 2007 if it was supplied with Leopard.  Have you approached FB support.  The shoe is usually on the foot of the service rather than the manufacturer of the item.

There is also a Combo update for Mountain Lion.  You should download that from this link ...

    https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1676?locale=en_GB

And lastly, have you checked you have enough RAM memory.  Your machine was probably supplied with 4Gb though Mountain Lion would function best with 6Gb.  You can run 6Gb with this iMac.    I have the same one (though no Face Book account) and although Apple specifies a maximum of 4Gb, I, and many others, use 6Gb comfortably..

Thanks, but I did update the combo patch.

Discovered I only had 4 GB memory!  Have considered having more put in, but probably won't at this point since I may well have to get another one in a year.

With my extremely-limited functionality on Facebook, I can't post a question to them!  But another responder (to my problem) suggested I just use another browser.  Wanted Chrome but you have to be up on 9.1 before it will download and I can't seem to get anything beyond Mountain Lion for my iMac (early 2009).

    THX much for help!

    Hello Catherine,

Some of these older OSs are not available any more.  But I think you could upgrade directly to El Capitan from where you are.  The 4Gb RAM you have may just carry you through, depending on what other needs you have programmed.  But more RAM means more money.  Check out the minimum requirements here ...

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201475  But this would not help your mouse too much as El Capitan has its own exclusive mouse.  More expense.  I think this is a devil and deep blue sea choice. Thank you for the help star.

Did you try my most recent suggetion that I posted in your other post here about installing the most up to date Adobe Flash Player?

Also, forget about Google Chrome browser. It is a serious drain and resource hog on any version of OS X.

    Download and use Mozilla Firefox.

The current version is still compatible with OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion.

The go to the Adobe website and install the latest Adobe Flash Player

I do not think this is a mouse issue, but a web browser/ FaceBook navigation issue thst maybe solved by installing the latest Adobe Flash Player into Mozilla Firefox.

    Good Luck!

Yes I saw your Adobe advice but I try to stay away from it as much as possible.  (Although hopefully later versions are better than the earlier ones!)

But yes I've decided to go with Firefox.  That might clean up the problem right there.

Well to my surprise, my machine *could* upgrade to El Capitan but since I wouldn't be able to "downgrade" in case anything went wrong I'm just going to stay on Mountain Lion.  Everything works perfectly except Facebook, so if I can fix that problem via Firefox, i'll be happy.

I realize I'm fighting a losing battle -- OS-wise and hardware-wise -- since my iMac is now 7 years old.  (Eons in the tech world!)  I'm just hoping to get another year out of it before I have to buy a new machine.

THX so much for all your help!

If the FB website uses Adobe Flash Player content for any of its navigation, it will not work until you install Adobe Flash Player.

Ignoring this will not help your situation.

If your Apple Mighty Mouse works with the web browser for other websites other than FB and for everything else that you use a mouse for, then the culprit is the lack of a neccessary web plugin that is being used on the FB website.

I believe that missing web plugin IS Adobe Flash Player.

There is no work around for this.

There are still a lot of Adobe Flash Player based websites still out there on the web, you will have difficulty with each and every one of them if you do not install the latest Adobe Flash Player plugin from Adobe's own website.

In most cases, Adobe Flash Player is very much still a necessary evil piece of plugin software that still needs to be used.

Go to the Adobe website, search for Adobe Flash Player and install the latest version.

This is all I am going to say on this subject.

    Good Luck to you.

This goes out to the Moderators

You deleted some of my posts here based on what.

Here is my basis of fact and not speculation, on what I believe is true and factual to the best of my knowledge.

My information on the status of the Safari Web browser in OS X 10.6 or 10.8 is not speculative, it is fact!

There have been no security updates or Safari updates for 10.6 in years.

As far as I am aware, no new security or Safari updates for 10.7 Lion and just one recent security update for OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion that I received the past April that other contributors have been telling me is probably close to a year old AND, since I started more regularly using OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, I have not seen ANY Safari updates, at all!

The only OS X security updates and Safari updates I have seen and downloaded were for OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks.

My comments were not speculative, at all!

I was stating a known fact, unless I am in error somehow.

Apple is only issuing iTunes updates for OS X 10.8.5 and higher (for how long only Apple knows).

Is Apple still issuing security, iTunes updates and Safari updates for OS X 10.7.5 Lion users that I have not been aware of?

Is this where I made my error and why you considered my comments speculative?

There have been no updates to OS X 10.6 or 10.8 for quite sometime and no Safari updates, either.

So, those versions of Safari are much less secure, now,  and shouldn't be used.

    This is NOT speculation!

A web browser that has not been updated or issued new browser security updates for quite sometime is a less secure browser and unsuitable for use on the Internet!

Does THAT explain the situation more clearly to you guys?!

    Does it?

    Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Prefeences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

    Safe Mode

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Thanks Mr Root, I really appreciate your info.  However, I don't have time to go thru all that.

I have never used Time Machine -- I just 'manually' backed up my data onto an external hard drive before I began my upgrade process.  But once I'm sure everything "works", I'll start using Time Machine.

Re my other problems, I've scheduled a "Genius" app't for 5:30 today.
