Your computer is a total mess. Not only is MacKeeper still installed you have also installed antivirus software. OS X does not need AV apps to run well, if left alone and simply kept up-to-date OS X tends to run well for years. Uninstall both MacKeeper and the AV app(s) by following the developers instructions.

In addition you are operating the computer with the bare minimum of RAM for El Capitan, Your 2007 iMac may accommodate up to 6GB, I seriously recommend upgrading to 6GB. If you decided to upgrade the RAM, purchase only quality RAM from either OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial (buy direct).

In your case however after upgrading the RAM I would strongly recommend doing an erase and install of OS X and then manually installing your apps and then restoring only your data files. You also may want to consider replacing the computer as it is now 10+ years old.

i upgraded to 4GB. There is no way to keep 1 of the 2GB as well is there? Only 2 slots, right?

Do I need to get an El Capitan disc?

To get to 6GB, you install 1 x 2GB and 1 x 4GB. Buy the RAM from OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial, if you choose Crucial buy direct.

By the way, there is no such thing as an El Capitan Disk. It's only available via download.
