However now I need to access years of photos I can't seem to find them in there at all? I also saved on an external hard drive iphoto but now cannot open it as my mac doesn't support it?? Is there an app I can use or a way I can retrieve the pics. All my daughters baby pics and videos!! OMG!!! HELP!!

The new Photos for Mac application can open iPhoto libraries and convert them to Photos libraries.

What you need to find is the iPhoto Library where iPhoto stored your photos while you were working on Lion.

I also saved on an external hard drive iphoto but now cannot open it as my mac doesn't support it??

What did you save on the external drive?  The iPhoto application or your iPhoto Library?  By default the iPhoto Library will be in your Pictures folder.  Which photo libraries are in your Pictures folder and what is on your external drive?

Do you still have your iPhoto Library?

If so, you can still get to the photos themselves. You may end up losing any Albums, keywords, etc, but the images should still be in the old Library.

Try all the other suggestions and if those fail, we can likely still get the photos out of the Library.

Depending on how old your iPhoto Library is, here is another option to fix the iPhoto Library so that Photos can assume control of it: Using the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool - Apple Support

There is also this third-party software which also may help "recover" the Library to make it importable: https://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/

Your question is a bit ambigous.  The photos are not saved in the iPhoto application but in photo libraries. So, please, confirm first that you still have your iPhoto Library after the upgrade to El Capitan.

And tell us, where your iPhoto Library is located. There are conditions when iPhoto cannot migrate the iPhoto library automatically, for example, if your iPhoto library has been created by iPhoto 7.1.2 or older. Then you need to prepare it with the iPhoto Library upgrader.  Or, if the library is on an external drive with the wrong file system. So, tell us more about how you uesd iPhoto on Lion.

Thank you for responding. I was lucky enough to a link sent to me from Apple suggesting how to migrate. However when the photos shownin the libray there are no folders. Still happy to see them!! Oddly though when I added another library it asked me to switch libraries? Then it looked liked it was saving those but everything disappeared. I have tried again & have one library there but wanting to add others that I renamed ages ago & saved on my external hard drive as a back up? Can I save more than one? I also recently purchased iCloud but aren't sure if they dissapoear to that or not? Never opened it. When I did look nothing was in there? Since adding the first library it seems all other photos that were in there are gone too? Weird. Appreciate your help though!!

Clarification question - how many Photos Libraries do you have? If you alternate which Library Photos uses by opening Photos with the option/alt key held down, are the Photos in any Library?

Photos can use several libraries, but you will only see the photos from the library you have currently open in Photos. See this Help page:  https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.0/?lang=en#/pht6d60b524

You cannot merge Photos Libraries into one library directly in Photos. If you want to merge your libraries into one library, you have several options: See this user tip:   https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-10211
