Q: Capture From Tape, Odd Error Message

Capturing from tape claims we must set a Storage Location in Preferences.  Works fine capturing it archive, just not a regular import into the Library.  I don't use tape, an associate at my station is trying this from a Canon HDV camera. Never seen that message before.

Verified he's got "Copy To Library" set.  Verified settings for the Library in the Inspector.  He is using external media, but that shouldn't matter.

I've never captured from tape in FCPX, so, just looking for clues...

What interface are they using? FWtoTB? or a deck? If they have anything Blackmagic, it might be easier to log and capture in Media Express (ProRes codecs supported.)

This is a system that has done this just fine for a couple of months now.  Then yesterday it just crapped out.  We deleted prefs, rebooted, nothing works except recording from tape to a Camera Archive.

This is a pre-T'bolt Mac, FW only.

Also, the recording function stopped working, also.  Now, to record new voice overs, they have to create a new Library from scratch.

I have an older firewire 800 MB Pro that I can test with HDV capturing.

Knowing your friends Mac specs would be helpful.

    Can you provide details??

My older Mac runs with El Cap but cannot load the newer Sierra.

I'm thinking that as time goes on (apart from hardware failures) the older Macs are beginning to play Left Right out.

just a stab into the dark:

both processes are 'live recordings', so in my ignorance, I would expect an excessive use of 'cache/swap/internal HDD/younameit'.

How is the situation on the local drive? Partitioned? OS not enough room to 'breath'?

If that were the issue, then a new Library wouldn't work any better than an existing Library.
