Q: How do I import archived old version FCPX libraries?

In earlier versions of FCPX, as you updated to some of the newer versions it would ask if you wanted to archive your library of projects and events before it converted them to the new "bundle" format. I'm glad a I did this. I'm now on version 10.2.3 and recently had to update an education video from a couple of years ago - i.e., just change a couple of references and re-export the movie. The library opened and event opened okay, but the particular project I wanted just crashes the whole FCPX app when I try to open it! Somewhere along the series of version updates an incompatibility has arisen. Then I remembered that I have the original archived "replica" of the library that FCPX saved in the old format of events and project folders. So I figured I just need to re-import this into the latest version from scratch - surely the very reason for making this archive in the first place. I have searched around but can't find instructions of how to do this. Help please anyone!

Thanks,

Terence

Hi Russ - I think you are probably right and it would not work in any case.

Yes, if I drill down through the projects subfolders to the particular project in question it contains a folder called backups, within which is a file called 20140905-135926-PDT.fcpproject.

OK. I've been away. Let me refresh my memory on how to replace the current project with the backup. I'll (or someone else with better recall) will post back on it – probably tomorrow. Once that file replaced, you could do another update. A bit of a long shot, but worth trying.

Very much appreciated and worth a shot at least.

Try this. In your external drive, move the Final Cut Pro Events and Final Cut Pro Projects folder into a new folder to "hide" them from FCP. Create 2 new folders, named Final Cut Pro Projects and Final Cut Pro Events, respectively at the root level of that drive.  Navigate to the archived problematic project folder in its new "hidden" location. Copy that to the new Final Cut Pro Projects folder. Navigate to the archived event that the project is linked to and copy that to the new Final Cut Pro Events folder. Open the moved project folder and replace the CurrentVersion.fcpproject file with the timestamped backup file. (Note that the backup has to be moved up one level in the folder hierarchy.)

Repeat the replacement  process for the event files.

Launch FCP and from the File menu > Update Projects and Events > Locate, navigate to your external drive, and update.

Post back and let us know.

    Good luck.

    Hi Russ,

Thanks a lot - I'll attempt this later this week and let you know how it turns out.
