Q: Problem with Win 7 installation on El Capitan

I've got iMac 27' mid 2010, OSX 10.11.6.

I had Win 7 installed, but I decided to enlarge the bootcamp size. So I deleted the partition via BCA and tried to re-install Win 7.

The problem is that my optical drive is dead. So I tired to use the external drive. BCA allows me to create the partition and download drivers, but after the restart I see "no bootable device found; insert one and press any key" error.

I used burned iso (from MS site) and the original Win 7 disk, however the result is the same.

The only way I see is to downgrade to Mountain Lion and install Win 7. Then upgrade again to EC.

We need to try and fix the issue with the internal Optical drive. There is a Winclone/VMware solution, if the Optical drive cannot be fixed.

Can you look at SuperDrive broken cannot Boot Camp Windows to El Capitan and see if helps resurrect your Optical drive?

So as I understood, I should try to reinstall ECap? However this could be not helpful and timeconsuming. It seems, the downgrade way looks more useful, because I'm pretty sure it will work.

Well, I'll try, but I still don't understand why Apple left us this painful way with optical drive only.

    I will give the feedback.

You do not need to downgrade/upgrade. You can install the shipped version of OS X on an external disk and upgrade it to the OS X version you want to test with. Please backup current OS X first. DU versions vary, and can cause more problems than you may want to tackle.

Please see How to install OS X on an external drive connected to your Mac - Apple Support .

No, I can't, because I cannot install older versions on OSX. While I try to install it on the external disk, the message "This copy of the “Install OS X” application is too old to be opened" is displayed. Hehe.

I'll try to install from usb flash-drive, however, I presume I'll fail in it

What is the version of OSX you are offered via Internet Recovery?

I tried, but the process of IR was very slow and finally Mac got stuck (the internet connection is pretty fast).

So I decided to install old version which I saved on my external HDD for black day.

Use a wired connection, if possible. IR behaves differently than the standard installer.

I have installed ML on ELC Macs via IR without any issues.

    Well, this isn't work.

    1. I've installed Mavericks on ext disk via IR.

    2. I booted from this ext disk. Relevant BCA allows me to split main disk (in iMac) into two partitions, but it says it will erase all the info from it. So I declined.

    3. Then I booted from main system (El Cap) and made a separate partition on it, formatted in FAT. Restarted from external and BCA shows me only "remove win 7" option to make unite partition again (while Win7 isn't installed yet).

So anyway the only option I see is to transfer all important data, erase the main disk, then install Win 7 and only then El Cap. I really disappointed that Apple made this simple thing so incredibly difficult.

This is expected, because you now have two disks. The internal and external. If you choose the internal disk, because OSX is running from the external disk, it will try and erase the internal disk.

    3. Then I booted from main system (El Cap) and made a separate partition on it, formatted in FAT. Restarted from external and BCA shows me only "remove win 7" option to make unite partition again (while Win7 isn't installed yet).

BCA does not look at the contents of the partition to decide if Windows is installed or not. The existence of the partition is used to decide to remove the partition.

So anyway the only option I see is to transfer all important data, erase the main disk, then install Win 7 and only then El Cap.

If you erase the main disk, there is not Optical drive to install Windows. Your issue is unrelated to El Capitan or Mavericks. It is the non-functional Optical drive.

I really disappointed that Apple made this simple thing so incredibly difficult.

If you get the optical drive repaired, it will work. From OSX Terminal 'drutil' commands may be able to correct some minor issues.

The other option you have is to use the method mentioned in *** .

Hmm. I don't understand what was the sense in your advice "You can install the shipped version of OS X on an external disk and upgrade it to the OS X version you want to test with". Yes I can, but it doesn't help me install Win anyway.

"It is the non-functional Optical drive." Yes, but there is no any normal solution for that, like install from usb or from external optical drive or from network or anything else. And that's EL and Apple issue.

"From OSX Terminal 'drutil' commands may be able to correct some minor issues" And I have no idea how to do this. And if I have minor issues. And if it helps. And many more. I'm a simple user, unfortunately.

The external disk may help diagnose issues. If you have an OS X  backup, you can erase the internal disk, use it for Windows using a VMware/Winclone method, create a Winclone once Windows is installed, restore OS X and then restore the Winclone backup.

You will the exact same issue in Mountain Lion, Mavericks or El Capitan. It is broken/non-functional hardware.

I posted a link earlier which has some drutil commands. Can you please try the commands from OS X Terminal?

That's what I'm talking about. Why not just use a usb stick. Simple. Fast. Easy.

"It is broken/non-functional hardware" Yes, so why they left me no option then? While it is possible on Macbook?

The 2010 has a different EFI than the Macbook (assuming this is the latest Macbook). the 2010 also has a built-in Optical drive. USB also works on Minis which do not have a built-in Optical drive.

What happens if you put in an Audio CD? Also, did you get a chance to look at https://youtu.be/5b48mtDrB_s ?
