Not sure why you cannot use "Data" as the name of the Time Capsule hard drive, since it is the default.

But, if you want to change the name "Data" to something else.......

Open AirPort Utility on your Mac.......(Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility)

Click on the picture of the Time Capsule

Click Edit in the smaller window that appears

Click the Disks tab at the top of the next window

Next to Partitions, you will see "Data".

Click directly on the "Data" name and the box will change to allow you to edit the name, just like you can change the name of any other drive

In the example below, I have changed the name of the drive to "Backups"

Click Update at the lower right of the window to save any changes that you have made

When I click on "Data" as the preferred disc for my Time Capsule I get the message,"There was a problem connecting to the server"Thomas's AirPort Time Capsule". I thought it was because of the name but apparently it is not. I don't know what else to do.

Unless you changed the name previously to something else, the hard drive on the Time Capsule is named "Data" by default.

What operating system is your Mac using?

Are you trying to set up the Mac to back up to the Time Capsule using Time Machine?

What troubleshooting steps have you performed so far?

I changed the name of the disc from Data to Backups. I had unplugged the Time capsule to reset it but that did not work. I am current on my OS X  (10.11.6) and I am trying to reset my Time Machine as a backup to my iMac. I had been using this for over a year. This all started when I plugged in a thumb drive to store iMusic data. I was never able to access the drive and then lost connection to my Time Capsule

Sorry, I am not clear on whether you just changed the name of the Time Capsule hard drive from Data to Backups as a result of your original question......or.....whether you changed the name of the Time Capsule hard drive to Backups some time ago, and it was merely a coincidence that my example on how to change the name of the drive was also the same name that you chose before, which was......Backups.

If you just changed the name from Data to Backups, if we can get Time Machine working again, it will make a new complete backup of your Mac all over again.  If you don't want that to occur, then it would be good idea to change the name of the Time Capsule hard drive back to Data, as it was before.

We have some things for you to try, once we have a clear understanding of what has and has not occurred with the name of the Time Capsule.

OK, I understand that your Time Capsule hard drive is named Data, and that the thumb drive is not active at the moment. If we can get Time Machine backups working again.....then.....we will discuss the thumb drive.

When I click on "Data" as the preferred disc for my Time Capsule I get the message,"There was a problem connecting to the server"Thomas's AirPort Time Capsule".

Does this mean that you are trying to select Data as the destination for your Time Machine backups and cannot do this......or......does this mean that you are trying to open Data to see the files on the drive and/or add normal files to Data?

In either case, please perform a complete power cycle of your entire network. To do this......

Power off all devices on the entire network.....modem, Time Capsule, computers, accessories, etc.....in any order that you want

    Wait a minute

Power up the modem and let it run by itself for 2-3 minutes

Power up the next device connected to the modem, and let it run for a full minute

Keep powering up devices one at a time, about a minute apart until the entire network is back up

See if you can now access the Time Capsule drive

I did all that but I still get the message that there was a problem connecting.

Sorry, but you did not answer the question that I asked in the previous post. Let's try again, please.

    You said........

When I click on "Data" as the preferred disc for my Time Capsule I get the message,"There was a problem connecting to the server"Thomas's AirPort Time Capsule".

    I asked........

Does this mean that you are trying to select Data as the destination for your Time Machine backups and cannot do this......or......does this mean that you are trying to open Data to see the files on the drive and/or add normal files to Data?

    On your Mac.....

Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)

Click on Data to highlight it

    Click Remove Disk

    Close the window

    Restart the Mac

Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)

After I open Time Machine, I can find no place to click ADD Or Remove discs. There is select a disc or options to select discs to exclude from backups but nothing else I can see.

If Add or Remove Disks does not appear, then this means that you have no disk selected or designated at the present time as a destination for Time Machine backups.

    Click on Select Disk

Click on Data to highlight it

    Click Use Disk

Then click the Time Machine clock icon at the top of the Mac's screen and click Back Up Now.
