Q: How do I export a photo from Photos to an iMovie project

My computer is an iMac operating OS X version 10.11.6.

The computer has a 3.3 GHz Core 17 processor and 16 GB 1867 MHz memory.

I want to export a photo from Photos into an iMovie project.

When I try this through Photos, iMovies is not provided as a option.

The same is true when I try to import the photo through iMovie.

I am using Photos Version 1.5 and iMovie'08 Version 7.1.4

I have managed to move the photo into iMovies project file as a JPG file but it is not recognised in the project workspace.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Regards,

Mike

The Photos System library should appear under libraries in iMovie 10.  It is not recognised by earlier versions of iMovie which are also not completely compatible with El Capitan.  See:

Designate a System Photo Library in Photos - Apple Support

You can also export an unmodified original from Photos to the desktop then drag and drop this into the iMovie timeline or event pane.

    Thanks Geoff.

Unfortunately your suggestions didn't solve all of my problems.

While I was able to move the photos into the timeline they did not appear in the viewer.

I was also not able to import them into the event pane.

I followed the System Photo Library instructions and again, iMovie would not show photos in the event library, even if I opened a new System Photo Library.

I also have a number of video clips in my Events pane that when moved into the Timeline, do not appear in the Viewer pane

Should I update iMovie and start again?

    Regards,

    Mike

Still photos not showing is one of the known problems with iMovie 8 & 9 running under El Capitan.  The only real solution is to update to iMovie 10.1.2.  With this version you should be able to see your Photos system library under 'libraries' in iMovie.
