Q: My wifes email are sent to her but also to me she does not have automatic forwarding at our providor server

My wife and I both have ipads and iphones and use the same Mac. We have separate Apple ID's and separate email addresses. Emails sent to my wife also arrive in my inbox. I spent  over an hour on the phone to my provider and they finally decided that there was no forwarding set up at their end an therefore it must be an Apple problem   Help

    Who sent the email? If you can contact that person, ask them if they include your email address in the Bcc. No one will be able to see his/her email address if it's entered in the Bcc field.

    Which inbox? The one on the iPhone, or the one on the Mac, or both? The only way for your wife's mail to arrive on your phone is like ShagCA mentioned, or if your wife's account is setup on your phone. Your phone cannot go to your wife's account and pick up mail without her credentials.

    Thanks ShagCA but it's every email that is addressed to my wifes email address arrives also in the inboxes of the joint Mac and my iphone and ipad and there is no email forwarding set up in my wifes or my webmailaccounts at the providers server

    This can only mean that you have your wife's email account configured on the iOS device(s) that you use or within your account on the Mac.

     

    • On the Mac, check "System Preferences" > "Internet Accounts".  Find any entries on the list that reference your wife's account and delete them.
    • On iOS (iPhone/iPad), check "Settings" > "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" and remove any account that references your Wife's account (in particular, look at the iCloud account)

    Yes you are quite right. Although the IPads and IPhones are completely separate and there is no no reference to the other accounts in IPads or Iphones ,there is a reference to both mine and my wife's accounts in "Internet Accounts on the Mac. What I wanted was for emails to both of us to go to the Mac only.

    Maybe I'm asking the impossible but in 1 ½ hours on the phone to Applecare and 2 ½ hours with my providor has yielded less sense than Fishing Addict has just offered.

    Am I asking too much.

    I'm still kind of confused.  Are you asking that when someone addresses an email to both your address, and also your wife's address, then that email will ONLY be delivered to the Mac, but not also be delivered to your respective iPad and iPhones?

     

    If that's what you are asking then NO there is not a way to do that.  When someone addresses an email to more than one email address, the email is sent by the server to each of those recipients separately.  The server has no way of knowing that you all are a couple, nor does it have a way to deliver mail to only a specific device but not others.  If you have your Mac configured to receive mail to you then it will receive ALL of your mail, as will your iPhone.  The same goes for your Wife's accounts.

     

    The only possible solution to this would be for you to create a third (shared) email account (for the both of you) and tell friends that they should use that when trying to reach both of you.  Then, only set that account up on the Mac (but not either of your phones or iPads).

    Thanks for all your efforts. Sorry for the confusion.

    Emails addressed to my email arrive in the inbox of the Mac and my IPad and my IPhone. This is correct

    Emails addressed to my wifes email arrive in the inbox of the Mac and her Ipad and her IPhone. This is correct.

    BUT they also arrive in the inboxes of my IPad and my Iphone. Not wanted

    Then go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, and Calendars on your iPhone and iPad and remove her account.

     

    There are only three ways (that I can think of) in which your iPhone and iPad are receiving your Wife's emails:

     

    1) You have her mail account set up on your iPhone and iPad: Settings > Mail, Contacts, and Calendars

     

    2) You have forwarding set up on her mail account that is forwarding her mail to you (check the settings in her webmail interface)

     

    3) If you have a Gmail account, then check your account's webmail settings to see if you set it up the Gmail server to POP or IMAP retrieve her emails into your account.

    Thanks Fisher Addict. I really appreciate your advice but I tried options 1 and 2 days ago and we do not have a Gmail account. So I guess I am almost ready to give up. I'll call my provider on Monday and try again. Thanks again
