Q: I restored iPhoto from the Time Machine archive, but the app won't open.

This problem is on a MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.6.8, and involves iPhoto 8.1.2.

I'm helping a friend get her photos back. I restored iPhoto from the Time Machine archive, but the app won't open. The error message is, "iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem."

Before I got here, she erased her drive and did a reinstalled OS 10.6.8. The guy at Apple asked her not to do a full restore of her Time Machine archives; just to get individual items as needed. iPhoto didn't load with the OS, so we restored it. Neither clicking on iPhoto in her Applications folder, nor clicking on the iPhoto file in Pictures will open her photos.

Thanks for any help you can render!

As a test Hold down the option key and launch iPhoto - does it open correctly with a new blank library?

Sadly, no. Same message and report to Apple.

    Thanks for helping!

    Thank you, Larry!

Last question: she moved recently and can't find her original disks. Do you know of another way to restore this software without buying it again? She already bought 10.6.8 again, but that disk didn't come with any of the add on apps.

Can you post the first 100-150 lines of the crash report?

I was thinking about seeing if my iPhoto on my computer would open her files, but I don't want to risk merging photos or losing photos. I'm going to research if there is a way to do that.

Try re-install the OS. The crash is caused because iPhoto can't find a part of that.

Could that be because she installed from a new disk she bought from Apple that is only 10.6.8? In other words, she has the OS disk, but the add on Apps that come with the disks she received when she bought her computer are missing.

And the plot thickens. It seems now her Superdrive isn't working. She says it worked a couple of weeks ago when she did the new install, but it won't do anything now–not with the install disk, and not even a normal music CD.

With her iPhoto files on an external drive, I was able to open them up using iPhoto on my computer by holding down option as LarryHN suggested. So the files should be ok, if we can't get iPhoto reloaded and working.

The problem isn’t the library, it's between the OS and the App
