Q: Help! Can no longer access Messages on desktop

I can no longer log into Messages app on MacBook Pro - after entering the password for my Apple ID, I get the following error:

Could not sign in to iMessage.

An error occurred during activation. Try again.

When skipping the log in, I can still see my old message threads, but all recipient names are red.

And I cannot even delete the "Apple ID (inactive)" in Preferences, since the delete button is greyed out.

Is there any other place where I should be looking to edit the account?

Messages clearly remembers my Apple ID, just doesn't let me log on any longer ...

[ note: Messages still works on a second MacBook Pro running 10.10.5, using another Apple ID ]

    Hi,

The Bonjour and iMessages account cannot be deleted.

The iMessages can be Signed Out (or the account disabled by unticking the "Enable this account" box).

The Apple ID last used will sow but the password will be empty.

The Bonjour Account find "Buddies" on your LAN that are also using Messages or iChat with the Bonjour account enabled.

IF you  either enable the Guest account or create another Mac User account (System Preferences > Users and Groups) and login to that does the iMessages account work there ?

(this will tell us if it is the computer (or possibly the Server end) or your Mac User Account).

Ralph, thank you for some rather helpful hints & pointers - highly appreciated!

I logged in with a different Mac user account and also with a guest account

    - still the same error message once I try to log into Messages.

I can log-in using another Apple ID though

    - so apparently the app is still functioning.

    One strange behavior:

switching back from the other Apple ID and putting in my user name and password

    -  for a split second I can actually see my logged in account window (listing my various email addresses & phone number) ... then it will switch back to the log-in window and the error message pops up again

Thanks for the leads, Eric, but to no avail

I tried following the "imagent" leads in the forum, but neither deleting in Keychain nor quitting in Activity Monitor made any difference.

I can still log in with another Apple ID, so I am assuming a re-install of Yosemite will not fix the issue?

You are welcome. Probably not for the reinstall.

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

    Hi,

So your Apple ID  does not work  but other Apple IDs do in both your Mac User account and test accounts ?

The Serial Number should show in the Apple Icon Menu > About this Mac in the Overview tab.

If it was missing then no Apple ID would be able to sign in.

    Try this:-

In Applications/Utilities open the Keychain Access app.

    Have Login set top left.

Passwords, lower left and then on the right find the IDS: yourApple ID-Auth Token item.

Highlight and delete and the  Restart Messages.

This should recreate this item in the Keychain but may not is the block is somewhere else.

IF the above does not work open a Finder window and use the Go Menu whilst holding down the ALT key.

Select the Library you can now see in the menu list.

    Navigate to Preferences.

Find com.apple.ids.service.com.apple.madrid.plist and Drag it to the  Trash.

Also find the com.apple.imessage.bag.plist and do the same (it is past all the other IDS items)

The first holds all the Apple ID and Alternatives and the second the last Server you did connect to.

Restart Messages and try logging in again.

These .plist should be recreated and it should login.

However the block could be at the server end.

If the above have not worked that would seem to be the Logical conclusion.

If so then you will have to contact Apple Support (Apple Care).

It is an Apple ID issue which is free to fix.

You may have to get your self pushed up the chain until you get someone that 1) can deal with the issue and 2) knows what to do.

They need to get the Server reset regarding your Apple ID's use on your Mac (it is a device specific Block and it can take a while to get them to look and then reset - which is normally left to the engineers now).

Thanks, Eric. I tried logging into Messages in Safe Mode, but the problem persists:

"Could not sign in to iMessage. An error occurred during activation. Try again." (my other Apple ID still signs is okay)

I also ran Etrecheck, the only red flag that came up seems to be this file:

    Unknown Files:

        ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert-@me.com-SharedServices.Agent.plist

            /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/OSServices.framewo rk/Versions/A/Support/CSConfigDotMacCert -l /Users/myusername/Library/Logs/CSConfigDotMacCert-@me.com-SharedServices.log -u @me.com -t SharedServices -s

One unknown file found. [Check files]

    User Launch Agents:

        [failed]    com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert-@me.com-SharedServices.Agent.plist (2009-04-17)

So your Apple ID  does not work  but other Apple IDs do in both your Mac User account and test accounts ?

My Apple ID is NOT working in guest / test / personal Mac User account [also not in Safe Mode], while a second Apple ID will work in all user accounts.

The Serial Number should show in the Apple Icon Menu > About this Mac in the Overview tab.

If it was missing then no Apple ID would be able to sign in.

    Serial number is showing.

This should recreate this item in the Keychain but may not is the block is somewhere else.

    No change to the problem.

Find com.apple.ids.service.com.apple.madrid.plist and Drag it to the  Trash.

Also find the com.apple.imessage.bag.plist and do the same (it is past all the other IDS items)

Restart Messages and try logging in again.

These .plist should be recreated and it should login.

    No change in the problem.

I should note that trash cannot be emptied:

"The operation can’t be completed because the item “com.apple.imessage.bag.plist” is in use."

So ... still drawing a blank on the issue and will try to make time for an Apple Support call.

What's strange is that I can sometimes see the log-in window (listing my Apple ID email addresses & phone number) - but just for a split second, before the error window will pop up again.

    Hi,

At one time Apple IDs issued by Apple were @mac.com ending ones.

The Service at the time was .Mac

This was replaced by the MobileMe service which could have @mac.com IDs linked to new @Me.com IDs

These have since been overtaken by @iCloud.com issued names.

There was a cross over between MobileMe and iCloud where iCloud issued @me.com IDs for a short while.

@Me.com IDs will only work if they were Linked to an iCloud ID.

With .Mac and MobileMe there have been System Preferences Panes to use for Connections.

Also the Finder's Side Bar has listed iDisk and currently iCloud Drive.

I do not have those items in my ~/Library/LaunchAgents folder.
