Q: iTunes locks up when I connect my iPod Nano

Why does my iPod Nano (4th or 5th generation) cause so many problems with iTunes. Recently iTunes locks up when I plug in my Nano.

I have in the last week reset my nano to factory and installed some podcasts and within the last couple days my iPod has been totally dumped and iTunes locks up.

Please help.

The connection between computer and iPod may not be reliable or there may be interference with another USB device.  That could be why it "locks up."

If possible, rule out a faulty USB docking cable as the cause by trying a different cable.  Or use the one you have with another device, to confirm it works properly.

If you are using a USB hub to connect the iPod, try a direct USB port on the computer to see if that makes a difference.  There should be no problem using a USB hub (I use one), but it may be faulty or overloaded (too many devices drawing power from it at the same time).

If the above does not help, as a test, shut down your computer and disconnect all USB devices.  You can leave standard keyboard/mouse connected, if used.  If your computer is a laptop, connect its power adapter so it's not running on battery power.  Do this to Reset the iPod

Start up the computer, run iTunes, and connect the iPod to a direct USB port on computer.  If things seem normal, do another Restore, and then sync the iPod as desired.  See if the problem recurs.
