Q: upgrade iphone 4 to ios 6 remotely

1 minutes ago (Show less)

Hi, my friend has an iphone 4 and wants to install WhatsApp, but first needs minimum iOS 6.  Thing is he's not familiar with technology, so I'm trying to help him remotely because I live in Spain and he's in Ireland. I have access to his apple id etc, and have downloaded iTunes to Windows 10. I already downloaded WhatsApp  In  his iTunes, but apparently one issue is that the download  was in Spanish iTunes and isn't valid for  Ireland??

Summarising: is it possible to do the iOS upgrade and install WhatsApp from Spain, for an iphone in Ireland? Or is it necessary to actually have the iPhone in my possession? Thank you

iPhone 4

You would need to have the phone in your possession (or be able to remotely access his computer). And he can only update the phone to the highest iOS version that it supports i.e. 7.1.2

He should be able to update by following the instructions on this page : Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

If his phone is already on iOS 5 (the current version is shown in Settings > General > About > Version on it) he should have a Settings > General > Software Update option so that he can update directly on it ; otherwise he can only update by connecting it to a computer's iTunes. Either way he should take a backup first (File > Devices > Back Up menu option in iTunes), and copy purchases over to his iTunes library (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases

That app also needs to be downloaded by his account (which only he can do, the Irish store can only be accessed in Ireland, if you try to download it in Spain on your computer by using his account you risk getting his account permanently disabled), either directly on his phone or on the computer's iTunes that he syncs to

Thanks for such a detailed reply. I had already downloaded WhatsApp in the Spanish iTunes for his phone in Ireland. I hope that doesn't disable his account But your idea about remotely accessing his laptop sounds like a good option. Thanks!!

If you downloaded it on your account it will be tied to your account, so only your account will be able to download updates to it - when he updates his phone he can download it from the App Store on his own account

No, I downloaded whatsapp using my friends apple id from here in Spain, so now I can see whatsapp in his (Spanish) iTunes page (I assume it's not in his Irish iTunes page?). The thing is to get it onto his phone. But now I realise that strategy wouldn't work. Another complication was that I had entered my Spanish visa card on his apple id, which was only possible to do using the Spanish iTunes. So now I assume he would have to enter an Irish visa card, or apple pass, to enable the downloading of whatsapp in the Irish iTunes page? Thanks.

If you've changed the country on his account to be the Spanish store then yes, he will have to put a card issued by an Irish bank on his account to change it back to his correct country and address. After updating the iOS version on his phone he could have just downloaded the app himself via the App Store app on his phone, changing country and downloading it wasn't necessary.
