Q: How do I remove songs from my Nano 6th Gen?

I have spent nearly several frustrating hours tonight trying to address the situation I'm facing with my device.

I want to remove songs from my iPod Nano 6th Generation to make room for other songs from my library.  And, unfortunately, I have not read a single post, so far, that has helped solve my difficulty.  If someone can help after reading the information I provide below, I will be immensely grateful.  Please be specific if you provide particular steps to follow.

Some pertinent information (see image below):

  • I have the latest version of iTunes installed on my laptop (12.4.3.1; 32-bit).
  • In preferences, I have selected the option that prevents automatic syncing.
  • When I select the connected Nano under "Devices," no Summary tab displays. I cannot find this tab anywhere in the displayed dashboard or under any section of the main toolbar at the top and left side of the page.
  • When I select "Music" under the device drop-down and select "Edit Playlist" in the center "Music" window, I'm unable to remove the check from any of the songs listed.
  • In the right-hand window that displays the songs on my Nano, I am unable to highlight and delete any song from that list.
  • iPod Nano 6th Gen Music.jpg

Thanks!

There are several different questions here; instead of writing an ultra long reply, I'll address some key points which may be causing confusion...

When I select the connected Nano under "Devices," no Summary tab displays.

In current iTunes, the iPod's settings screens (including Summary) are accessed by clicking the iPod's device button.  The screenshot below shows the upper left corner of my iTunes window, with the device button circled in red.  (I see it in your screenshot.)

Click this button to show the iPod's Summary settings screen.  The other setting screens (such as for Music syncing) are accessed from the sidebar along left side of window (below name and tiny image of iPod).  So, instead of the old "tabs" that go across top of window, you use this sidebar.

Is the iPod set to Manually manage music (checkbox) on the Summary settings screen?  If it is, you should be able to select the song (or songs) on the iPod's song list and press the Delete key to remove from the iPod.  In the iPod's sidebar, under On My Device, click Music, to show the iPod's current song list.  (You can also use the song list that you showed in your screenshot.)

If this song list is greyed out, the iPod is probably set to use automatic syncing (so you cannot manually remove songs).    In the iPod's sidebar, under Settings, click Music, to show the iPod's Music settings screen.  If Sync Music is checked there, the iPod is currently set to use automatic syncing.

Please post back with any remaining questions.

    Greetings, Kenichi!

My apologies for not responding sooner!  Cell phone issues have taken priority over the last few days.  Ôi trời ơi!

Your instructions working magnificently!  Thank you so very much!  It is interesting that I had selected the Device button a number of times without the Summary screen ever displaying.  I guess the moon wasn't shining just right for me that night!  Seeing that the Manually Manage Music checkbox was unticked, I ticked it and all has been good tonight as I have successfully removed songs from my Nano.

Again, thank you!  I will now grab the Crazy Glue and put back the hair I pulled out recently!  KIDDING!

    Cheers!

Glad to hear it's working.  Hopefully, your cell phone too...  Thanks for reporting back with the outcome.
