Q: I have had an erratic cursor.

I have had an erratic cursor.  My battery has 265 cycles and "normal."  I tried your ideas, and thank you very much.  Right now everything is OK.  I haven't had it acting OK for a week yet, and, not a day even.

My sister had sent me a spam email, after she complained to me that her Microsoft computer's OS was re-installed.  She only told me that she thinks something came in an email I forwarded some years ago!  Of course, that sounds nuts to me.  But her spam email, went by my spam filters because of her using her address.  I had also received some emails with her name and a strange address (not hers.)

So, the trouble started after this.

Still, it worries me that it could be the battery.  My question is if the system says "normal" does that mean that the battery is not swelling at all?

I used a USB mouse until when the cursor went nuts.

Also, the humidity in the house has been very high due to replacing a soil pipe where water had dampened the interior walls, plus, rainy weather and open windows, water in the basement.  Dehumidifier would shut off and not drain.

So, I am hoping that the issues are these:  1. High humidity, 2. Keeping the Macbook Pro 2012 Retinue plugged in continuously, but for one night went the battery was used until almost empty this past week, 3. New OS might help.

As you and I can tell, after two days of fiddling, I even downloaded Beta Sierra and ATT McAfee.  My Airport Utility lost, just for this computer, lost the access to my Time machine backups.  But, I got it back and immediately used it prior to OS loading.

Of course it is humorous to be on one hand blamed for an older sister's computer problem, and then to have one on a computer which is virtually problem free!  My Macbook is amazing, and I hope it continues to be.

The $200 price tag on a new battery is nuts.  I was happy to find out that my display problem was so common as to be a free repair.  This was a few years back.  I did get a free repair, although, I was told two things at the time, free and not free.  A battery with 265 cycles sounds and swelling sounds like a fault, but, hopefully, it is as good as the system information says it is.

Please advise me on whether the system information will be accurate as to a battery that is failing in that manner!

Here is the Apple support article regarding trackpad problems:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203171

In regards to an expanding battery, the ONLY way you can check that is by opening the MBP and visually inspecting the battery.  That the condition says 'normal' is irrelevant.  Should it have expanded, it must be taken out immediately and replaced before further expansion damages the MBP.

    Ciao.

Thank you for your quick response.  I am going another day without an erratic cursor, and, I have full use of the laptop. Humidity in the house is above 75% at this time.  If the problem returns; I will call the genius bar to the north of our nearest metropolis and have the Macbook checked. There were times in this episode where I could not move the cursor with the track pad.  It moved normally, it seemed, before the OS was loaded; that gave me hope that it wasn't a swollen battery.

    Dear sharonmarie,

Please understand there needs to be a sense of urgency if the mere possibility of a swelling battery exists. Batteries to not swell at a constant rate. They can start slowly, and then overnight expand enough to destroy the computer. Take a look at the results of a swelling battery in the photos in this recent thread:

Help - MacBook case buckled, what do I do?

Caught early, a battery in the early stages of swelling can be replaced before other damage to your computer's working bits that could render the computer irreparable.

A swelling battery may spontaneously catch fire.

Have it inspected as soon as possible!

Thank you.  It is acting absolutely normal.  I suspect the over humid conditions, but, my sister had her issues and sent me the offending email.  Still, I will have to make that long drive I suppose, to Toledo.

Thank you.  I will make that long drive to Toledo, to the Apple store.

I understand long drives. When Apple Stores first opened, the closest was Seattle, over 300 miles away with a mountain pass in the way that is always questionable in winter. Now there is an Apple Store in Spokane WA, a mere 100 miles from me!
