Q: Jerky movie clips after export to .m4v.

I have created a slideshow in Photo with some video clips.  The clips play fine in Quicktime, Photo slideshow, etc.  But when the slideshow is exported to a .m4v format movie, the clips are jerky.  Even the DVD created with the .m4v movie plays the clips jerky.  Is this a problem with Photo or the format I am exporting?  Or maybe even my DVD creator which is Wondershare?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Ok Now this is making sense.  I shot a short clip at 30 fsp with my camera will pull it into iPhoto and then export to see if it works better.  Meanwhile,  I will have to create my shows with the 25 fsp clips (Africa) in iMovie.  I should then export it from iMovie at 25 fps to correct this problem.  Is that right?  Unfortunately, I will have to retitle about 600 pictures in iMovie.  Plus add music and transitions.

    IT's most likely the DVD conversion, however you don't say a lot about which areas of the movie are jerky.

    When I am creating a slideshow in Photo, the movie clips display just fine, normal speed, no stops and starts.  However, when I export the slideshow into a .m4v movie so I can build a DVD, the clips become jerky.  Even when I view the .m4v in Quicktime player.  It seems the export from Photo to movie format is not working.  Are there some settings that are best for exporting?  Maybe instead of a 1080, use 720?  The movies were shot on a Nikon Coolpix P610 at 1920 X 1080.

    What format did they use before .m4v and what frame rate were they. What software are you using to convert them. What is the frame rate after conversion.

     

    Scrap what I said before, I didn't know you were talking about the clips themselves, I thought you meant once they were on DVD.

    The movie was shot with a Nikon Coolpix P610 at a 1920 X 1080 and created an .m4v file.  I am not sure where I can find frame rate.  My settings on my camera have a frame rate of 25.  I pull the .m4v files into Photo and incorporate them into a slide show of photos and movie clips.  The clips play fine until the entire slide show is exported to an .m4v file.  Then the clips are jerky, stopping and starting.  When I preview the slideshow in Photo everything looks good.

    OK, I think I've got it now, sorry it took a while. It seems there is no third party conversion software involved and my first suspicion under these circumstances is that the problem results from your camera shooting at 25 fps.

     

    The issue is that the Photos application exports videos at 30 fps and the jerkiness you see most likely comes when your 25 fps video is converted to 30 fps. I believe you'd get much better results if your camera has a 30 fps setting and you used that.

     

    However, jerkiness can also occur in any transitions you build into your slideshow because the photos slideshow is essentially designed to run on your computer which has much higher refresh rates than your standard TV frame rates. For this reason and especially when video is involved I recommend using iMovie to create movies, you can add video and photos and have much more control over what they do, the transitions are built for use at standard rates and you have the ability to export your movie at 25 fps which should resolve the conversion issues you are having with photos.

     

    The photos app will create reasonable slideshows from photos and video taken on your iPhone (or similar 30 fps device), it doesn't have much scope for handling much else.

    I'd experiment with small projects until you are happy with the outcome before spending lots of time on the project.

    Yes  I shot a short 30 fps.  Then exported one of the 25 and this 30 from iMovie.  The .m4v worked fine.  So now I will redo my shows in iMovie.  Is Photo slideshow just not good for a creating slideshows with both photos and movie clips?  I finally just switched to Photo from iPhoto and am not happy with its features.  Lost many features that iPhoto had.  I think I read that it is best to pull photos into iMovie from Photo. 

    Sure appreciate your help.  This community chat board has saved me many times.

    It's fine with photos and video from your iPhone if you want to produce something relatively quickly, if you want more you need to spend a little more time at it regardless of whether it's iMovie or another application.

    Now I have another problem.  When I export the movie it fails.  I am using 1080p, High Quality and Better Quality Compress.  I used Stabilize Shaky Video 33% and Fix Rolling Shutter Medium on every clip.  Got any ideas?
