Q: How to speed up my impossibly slow MBP

Late 11 MBP, 4gigs ram, 250 gigs free on the hard drive.  It has recently been sluggish to the point of being unusable.

Using the internet has become so slow I've been just resorting to my phone for a most things, (I HATE using phones).  YouTube takes like a minute just to play a video.  Merely scrolling down a page is on a 5-10 second delay.

I can no longer use my music composing/recording programs at all. Sessions created on this MBP now play back slow and choppy.  This is especially frustrating to me due to the fact that this is the main reason I bought it.

I know I could get more ram, or make other hardware improvements, but the $ is not there and I just want it to work close to like it did with the same specs.

The only thing that may or may not be a clue (I know at the very least that it's some kind of issue) is when I restart or shut down a window appears asking if I want to continue the installation of some program I can't figure out.

Virus, maybe?  Malware?20160820_085113.jpg

Anyways, any help or advice will be greatly appreciated or this thing is soon to become a $1500 table stabilizer.

Thanks in advance.

Resetting SMC could solve the problem.

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

You'd better add more RAM, replace HDD with SSD to speed up your MacBook Pro.

Okay, I ran Etrecheck which said my computer was running slow, and revealed a few adware problems, which I had it remove.

Then I ran it again and got this result:

Still running below average, but the rest is above my understanding.  Basically, whats written in red.  Hopefully you can help me understand.

Thanks for the suggestion, I've never heard of Etrecheck.

Just an update….I restarted and no longer got that installation window but the performance is still the same.

Hopefully the Etrecheck report can provide a clue, because I have none.

    Thanks again.

    I suggest the following:

Boot into the recovery partition and select Disk Utility from the 4 option menu.  Run Disk Utility>First Aid.

Install additional RAM.  A total of 8 GB should be sufficient (your MBP will handle up to 16 GB RAM).  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.

    Rid the MBP of Genio:

    http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-genieo/

Update the OSX to El Capitan.

Do you know the reason that Mac's Hosts file appears to have been modified?

OK, I ran disk repair from the recovery partition and it said the disk is fine.  I did all the steps from the link you posted to get rid of genieo but was only able to find two files,

    /Applications/InstallMac  and

    ~/Library/Application Support/com.genieoinnovation.Installer/

none of the rest were found, presumably removed by Etrecheck.

Still runs like crap, with my main program I use, Reaper, completely unusable.

As far as upgrading, I'm not trying to be stubborn, but I just don't see why I should have to upgrade just to get it to work like it used to with the same specs.  Just to get it to not run "too slow".  I just priced it on crucial and it's only $45 to get it to 8gigs but thats just frustrating to me, to not figure out what's actually making it do this.  That's just me I guess.

Anyways, I hope I don't sound ungrateful, as I do appreciate the guidance you've been giving me.

Yes, I restarted it, and all the other steps listed above, no change.  As far as the reason the HOSTs file has been modified, I actually have no idea what that means.

You don't have to upgrade, it is all up to you whether you fix this or not. You are the one that has to use this mess, no one else is affected.

If it were me I would.

It appears that you have outdated paceap app installed.  Either update it or delete it if you do not use it.

    Ciao.

That means a problem. Please read this user tip written by EtreCheck's author:

    Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file

I would remove the CrossOver CD Helper from Login items and totallay uninstall TuneUp. Apps like teh latter tend to have the opposite effect to what they claim:

    User Login Items:

        iTunesHelper    Application Hidden (/Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunesHelper.app)

Android File Transfer Agent    Application Hidden (~/Library/Application Support/Google/Android File Transfer/Android File Transfer Agent.app)

        Dropbox    Application Hidden (/Applications/Dropbox.app)

        PenTabletDriver    Application Hidden (/Library/StartupItems/PenTabletDriver/PenTabletDriver.app)

CrossOver CD Helper    Application Hidden (/Applications/CrossOver.app/Contents/Resources/CrossOver CD Helper.app)

Fitbit Connect Menubar Helper    Application Hidden (/Applications/Fitbit Connect.app/Contents/MacOS/Fitbit Connect Menubar Helper.app)

        TuneUpHelper    SMLoginItem  (/Applications/TuneUp.app/Contents/Library/LoginItems/TuneUpHelper.app)

Neither report shows your RAM as stressed but if you still use Crossover, you need more RAM.

Your MBP is still very good. Do an SSD and Ram upgrade for about $100 - $200

    You will be very happy.

I've never consciously installed this, how do I go about deleting it?  All I know how to do is look in applications and it's not there.
