Q: Compressor flickers and a gazillion more problems...

Hi there,

I have so many annoyances with Compressor (4.2.2, recently purchased) that I really don't know where to start.

Well, let's concentrate at the most annoying:

• Playing a movie with i/o compare enabled causes the playback to flicker and stutter like a 1920's movie.

(Looks also sometimes a bit like the fields are reversed, even the movies are progressive)

Moreover the canvas does not show any differences between in/out until I move its vertical in/out comparison bar completely to the right.

Setup:

iMac 27", late 2013, i7 3.5GHz, 24GB RAM, GeForce GTX 780M / 4GB VRAM, El Capitan 11.6.

(As claimed by Apple, this setup should be fine with Compressor 4.x)

What I tried so far:

1. Different movie containers (.mov, .mp4) with different codecs (several ProRes and H.264 versions)

2. Everything mentioned here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203476 (several times, w/ more restarts than I'd ever done in the last 10 years on all my Macs together...)

3. Disabled Perian 1.2.3

4. Read the whole web, completley...

Any other player, i.e. QT 7, QT X, even MPEG Streamclip plays nice.

This is what I found in the logs (right after a fresh Compressor install and system restart):

When dragging a movie to the batch list:

25.08.16 18:00:14,931 Compressor[635]: [18:00:14.931] ParseSampleGroupDescriptionAtom signalled err=-12848 (kFigFormatReaderError_ParsingFailure) (Zero sampleGroupDescription entries) at /Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/CoreMedia/CoreMedia-1731.15.206/Prototype s/FormatHandlers/Movie/MovieAtomParsing.c line 1814

Despite the warnings about Audio Units: audio plays well, only movie flickers & stutters.

Could anyone enlighten me, please?

Thanks in advance!

What is the source of the original video?  What codec/format?

What is the preset you're using to transcode it to?  How are you tweaking that?

    Hi BenB,

    thanks for taking your time.

As I wrote above, the original videos I tested are .mov & .mp4 containers with several usual ProRes & H.264 codecs. The input format seems to make no difference.

The output presets (tried most of them) make no difference either, as well as tweaking new output formats.

What makes me clueless is the fact that any other player performs without errors.

    Any ideas? Thanks again Sir.

[Edit] Additional info: I even didn't try to convert anything until now, because first I'd like to solve the errors the Compressor's play canvas shows up. It's not only not playable without the described errors, it also doesn't show in/out differences.

Assume your source file is being brought into Compressor directly and not sent to from FCP or Motion?

If you want, you might upload a short, representative section of a video to a file storage service like Dropbox so we can download and test it.

    Hello Russ H,

    thanks for looking into this.

Your assumption is right, the files come not from FCP nor Motion, just dragged from Finder to Compressor's batch-list.

I'll try to make a screencast tomorrow which may visualize the whole process better than it's explained by words.

    Thanks Russ and friendly regards.

    Well, here it is:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/1hbb3cga196qzx8/CompressorAnnoyancesPart1.zip?dl=0

Around 100MB. The .zip contains a Screencast, a .pdf with details of the used input files and a ReadMe.txt.

Thanks to anyone who takes a look into this.

    Regards.

Not encountered anything similar to that.

If you upload a short section of the source file, we can see whether we can download and reproduce.

    Thanks Russ for checking this.

Anyhow, I'm sure the problems are not coming from any input files. This is a Compressor's play canvas error.

As I migrated my system for several years now to newer machines/OS versions, this might come from an old decoder .component. I'll dig into my system tomorrow and let you know.

    Regards.

Thanks. The Preview comparisons displayed correctly for me.

Wondering whether there is a mismatch between the your Pro Video Formats installation and this version of the app. Suggest downloading from here.

If it still down't preview as expected, I'd uninstall Compressor with Digital Rebellion's FCS Remover and then download/install a clean copy.

Let us know how you make out.

    Thanks Russ.

I reinstalled the Pro Video Formats [2.0.4] as suggested but the flicker in Compressor is still the same.

Funny enough, the already installed AppleIntermediateCodec.component was newer [2.0.3] than the the one of the installer [2.0.2]. At the other side the whole IMX support was missed but any other install files where already up-to-date.

(Not only compared version numbers but also did deeper file diffs before installing)

I was also thinking as a last resort to try FCS Remover but I'm afraid to get even more mess on a productive used machine. Will maybe try however.

As I'm not unaware of video/audio editing, developing (20+ languages, even wrote my own video-player/editor) and working with Macs since the eighties (yeah, last century ), I still have no clue what causes this.

Therefore I'm thankful for any kind of further hints/suggestions.

    Regards.

Apple Intermediate Codec is outdated, not used anymore.

Have an Apple retail store check the Mac out for hardware issues.

    Hello Russ,

I've seen you're on an iMac as well but with El Cap 10.11.4. Is this still correct? What graphic card do you have?

I found out somewhere that some people had issues after upgrading to 10.11.6, i.e. their GPU support for distributed rendering w/ Compressor stopped working. Well, digging in the dark...

    Regards.

    To whom it may concern.

After a week of discovering more and more quirks on Compressor, I give up. I'm not only talking about my OT (which might be something on my machine but Compressor brings it's own components/frameworks inside the app package which seem not to be recognized by the OS correctly), I'm talking about the things even a beginner wouldn't code. So here are some examples of the "Gazillions"-1:

    • Try to have a dot in your filename and Compressor cuts out everything after the dot. As a coder, searching a file string from left to right instead of right to left to determine the extension, is...well...speechless to me.

    • Clickable elements are hidden until you move the mouse over the hidden option (i.e. hide/show in settings pane. But design goes over functionality...)

    • Resizing Compressors window sometimes causes the batch-list not to scroll completely.

    • The mix of language localization is terrible. (And more worse the inability of the OS to switch app-based language without a hack inside app-packages). Everyone speaks english in the professional filmmakers industry. Getting bad translations, especially on technical terms let's one pull his hair out while the client asks his self if you are worth the money.

    • Set an in/out point. Let the movie play. Stop it and step one frame back: It jumps to the in point instead. No words...

    • Missing keyboard shortcuts like switching preview: Not there.

    • Quit Compressor and it asks if you want to save (whatever) to an "Untitled" document, even there isn't a menu for saving whatever. (This quirk exist a long long time and still hasn't been changed. *sic*)

The list is much longer but I stop here, because my time is expensive as yours and I need this time to take care for my co-workers and clients.

I'm an registered developer since 14 years for Mac's OS's. Beside I'm driving a professional filmmakers business, I'm developing apps for my in-house needs. My employees would stone me for such a software.

And while I'm using Macs since some decades in professional & creative environments as a musician/filmmaker/developer, I feel sad how Apple is not interested anymore in the 'pros' and 'creatives'.

I'm out of here, this leads to nothing than expensive time waste to me (and to helpful people).

Thanks Russ anyway for your time and help.

PS: Please no more comments like "Let your mac check for hardware issues. It has none. And I'm a 'genius' by myself, not needing a 'bar'. I need a 'nerd' like I am but this 'internets' is now full of script-kids and non-knowledge that it's even hard to me to find solutions. Well, that's another topic...

This forum software is a catastrophe. Posting often results in messages like "Your content couldn't be saved" or: the user xyz (not me) has been banned. Trying to click the bottom popup "refresh page" immediately closes the popup making it unclickable. I really have enough. I think Apple has to do a lot now to get back a believing community. I can imagine what would happen if I would do this to my clients at my servers...
