Q: Can't save new Pages document

I created a new Pages document, but when I tried to save it I got the message "The file “Untitled 4” couldn’t be opened."

I'm on on iMac operating El Capitan (10.11.6); the version of Pages I'm using is 5.6.2 (2573)

    Hello RichK,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand from your post that you are not able to save your Pages document. I know how important it is to be able to save your Pages documents for later use. In the following discussion, a user named Kreklo suggests toggling the Documents & Data feature in the iCloud settings. To do this go to System Preferences > iCloud > Documents and Data. Then remove the check mark and then check it again. Then go back to Pages close it and open it again.

Thanks for the input, but I don't think I was able to follow the suggestion. (Dense, I guess.) I clicked on iCloud in System Preferences and I get a list of the data that are stored there. If I click iCloud drive options, I do see a list of apps that store documents and data in iCloud. I unclicked and clicked Pages, but that didn't help - I am still getting the same error message. (BTW, I get the same error message when I try to save a TextEdit doc.)

    RichK,

I recommend testing the issue and seeing if you can save the document while your Mac is in Safe Mode and/or in a new user account. The following articles have the steps you will need to test the issue in both Safe Mode and in a new user account:

    Safe Mode
How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

    Cheers

Thanks, Sarah. That did it. Just to double check, I restarted after starting in the Safe Mode, and was able to save documents in both Word and TextEdit. Again, thanks.
