Q: Can't Mute iPad Messages iOS 9.3.5

I don't use my iPad generally for iMessage but this week I do. I've tried to set up iMessage without the sounds, just the notification.

I have both the sounds setting for messages off, and the message setting sound off.

The odd thing is that the message tone is still coming through and its the custom one I've set for individual contacts on my iPhone.

Its as if my custom tone choice has attached to my iCloud and is overriding the no sound setting on the iPad.

Interestingly, I don't recall a setting that mirrors custom audio for contacts across iCloud. Its something that I noticed when I erased my iPhone before.. the incoming messages had my old custom tones. I'd have thought these were stored on the local device.

Id like to leave the audio in general on for my iPad (facetime calls etc) but not iMessage.

How can I do this?

    Hi glic,

If you would like to mute the sound for your iMessage and the custom tone for specific contacts are still sounding, try changing the custom tone for messages via the Edit Contact settings to 'none' on your iPad. To do so:

    1. Tap > Contacts
    2. Navigate to the contact with the custom tone
    3. Tap Edit > Text Tone
    4. Then Change to 'none'

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities to post your question. That should allow the notification to come through but not the sound.

    Have a great day.
