Q: iPad 2 can't restore

I've seen this problem discussed a number of places but no place recent and none of the suggestions have worked for me...

The situation: plugged my iPad 2 into an external charger. It immediately went to the "connect to iTunes" screen.

When I connected it to my Mac, it detected that the iPad had a problem and needed to be updated (though I'm pretty sure it was running the most recent iOS - it certainly was at most one update old). Downloaded & ran the update, got a message that it couldn't be updated, prompted me to restore to factory settings. Click restore... it goes through "extracting software" and "preparing iPad for update" and then hangs at "waiting for iPad".

I have reset the iPad (holding lock and home) numerous times. I have tried different cables. I have rebooted the mac.

I am out of ideas.

    Try Recovery Mode:

Connect your device to your computer and open iTunes.

While your device is connected, force restart it: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, and don't release when you see the Apple logo.

Keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen and wait for it to restore.

You may have to do the above more than once as recovery mode is difficult to get into.

Restore as New first and test it. Then restore from backup if desired. If the backup is corrupted it will likely bring back the issue.

If the above steps do not help, you may have to take it to an Apple store for testing.

I've reset it to recovery mode while connected to the computer probably 20 or more times.

Well, the appropriate butterfly in the amazon must have flapped its wings at the right moment, because this morning it was able to restore. Or maybe it had performance anxiety, because it finally worked when I just started the restore and walked away for 45 minutes.
