You can use the Image Capture app in your Applications folder to scan photos to your Mac.
Mac Basics: Using a scanner - Apple Support
For the CD, open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Finder > Preferences then select the General tab then make sure CD's and DVD's is selected.
And check your settings in System Preferences > CD's and DVD's.
