Q: I run a Mac Pro with El Capitan and iMovie 11 will not recognise my Sony FDR-AX35P 4K camcorder

I run a Mac Pro with El Capitan. iMovie 11 will not recognise my Sony FDR-AX45P 4K camcorder. It keeps asking me to connect a camera.

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

iMovie '11 (version 9) supported cameras do not include any Sony FDR models.  iMovie 10 supports a number of FDR-AXxx models though does not list your particular one  see: iMovie supported cameras - Apple Support

There are a number of problems running iMovie '11 under El Capitan, particularly with still photos not displaying.  (It also does not support 4K video).  I would recommend trying iMovie 10.1.2 which you should be able to upgrade to for free or may already have in your applications folder.  Although your particular camera model is still not listed I would expect that it would probably work and failing that you should be able to read files directly from the SD card if you put in an SD card reader.

Thanks for that Geoff. I can buy  the upgrade fro the Apple Store for $14.99 but after reading customer reviews I'm somewhat hesitant. It sounds like a disaster. Can you possibly advise?   Bryan

If you already have iMovie 9 you should be able to update for free - at least this used to be the case.  iMovie 10 has a very different interface but unless you rely some features that have been dropped (e.g. easy burning DVDs, snap to beats, wrapping timeline, non 16:9 aspect ratios) or have a very slow Mac you should find it a big improvement.

Thanks Geoff, I downloaded a free version of 10.1.2, and it is compatible with my camcorder, It;s certainly a different interface to iMovie 9, I'm still trying to familiarise myself with it. Anyway it all appears to be working OK.

                                                            With thanks and regards,

I'm glad to hear that it is working OK.  I don't think you will regret updating.  iMovie 10 is really a much simplified version of FCP X which you can always transfer projects to if you ever want the many more options and capabilities it offers sometime in the future.

iMovie 9 is not supported any more in any case.

    Geoff.
