Q: Maps Showing Only Grids

Hello, I have an iPhone 5c updated to the latest 9.3.5. However, upon using the system provided Maps app, it does not show anything except for grids. It can search my current location and a functional search bar. I can use other apps that uses maps such as Pokemon Go and Google Maps with no problems. Tried resetting and reinstalling the latest firmware to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    Hello Hammonia,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities.

If I understand correctly, the Apple Maps app is only showing you a grid and not any actual maps.  I have a series of things that should help fix this.

The first thing we want to do is to make sure you have a current backup of everything on your iPhone. It is always a good idea to have a backup.  If you follow this link, you will find instructions on how to do a backup:

How to backup your devices using iCloud or iTunes

There are a couple of different resets that can be performed on the iPhone.  Since I am not sure which one you did, I am going to suggest the order in which to perform them, from the easiest to the more extensive.

The first one is to reset all settings.  Reset All Settings resets preference files that may be having issues. This step will not delete your contacts, photos, or any personal information. It does remove all of your preferences for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do No Disturb, Notifications, General, Sounds, Brightness & Wallpaper and Privacy, and removes your Touch ID & Passcode.

You do this by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

Once you have done this, test the iPhone and see if Maps is showing actual maps now.

If it is not, then the next step would be to determine if this is software or hardware related.  To do that, the iPhone needs to be set up as new.  This will erase all the content on the iPhone so be sure that backup is complete.

Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

Once the iPhone is set up as new, test the Maps app again.  If it is still not working correctly, the iPhone will need to be seen by an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.  You can find the nearest one here:

    Find Locations

If Maps is working as expected, then go ahead and restore the backup using these directions:

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup

Once the restore is complete, test Maps again.  If the problem returns, this would indicate there is something in the backup file that is causing the issue.  The iPhone would then need to be restored as new again and everything would need to be manually loaded back onto it.

    Have a great day!
