Q: Photos shows no images, just tells me that they are there

I have a problem. For whatever reason, my original "Photos Library" file seems to have gone. Luckily I have an older copy on an external harddrive. However, after selecting that as the new library for Photos, it shows the albums and the photo count and some greyish squares, just not the actual images. How do I get the images back? Please?

(Oh, and I do have an older iPhoto library, but the migration tool does not want to open that and I cannot run iPhoto on El Capitan )

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

You can run iPhoto on El capitan providing it's up to date, however why won't the migration tool work on the old library, is it because it's already been migrated.

Maybe if you provided details we could help more

    what exactly does

my original "Photos Library" file seems to have gone

mean?  If it is gone it is due to something - and it either is gone or is not gone - seems to have gone makes no sense

The best solution is to restore your most recent back up form when it seemed to be available

as to no photos in the old library - if you give it a day does anything change?  If you rotate a "blank"photo and rotate it back does it appear? If yo double click on an blank photos does a large version appear?More information will help us help you
