Q: How do i ungroup messages to the same contact, but different devices

my wife has two iPhone 6's... one for work and one personal.

When she messages me from either, and i respond in Messages on mac... it seems to randomly decide to respond to one or the other account... not necessarly the one that she messaged me from.  This has led to some awkward moments where i say something inappropriate for a work phone (even though i was responding to her personal account).

When i respond from my iphone it doesn't seem to mix them up... it responds to the proper account.  but from my mac, it will randomly go from one to the other.

is there a way to ungroup the messages so it doesn't group everything under her contact under the same conversation thread.

2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.5.5), 13" macbook

Is she using the same Apple ID on both devices? If so, I don't believe you can separate them. If she's not, create a separate contact entry for her work information. Call it something like Wife's Name - Work. Put her work contact info there and remove it from the original contact information.

No, she's not using the same Apple ID.

I'll separate out the work phone number and try that.  Would be nice to not have multiple entries for each device.... but at least our messages will be to the right place.

Messages uses Contacts to get the information and Contacts sorts things by name/person, not device. Your needs make perfect sense but, I suspect they're not shared by a huge number of people. However, it wouldn't hurt to submit some feedback to Apple requesting the change you'd like to see:

    Best of luck.

odd then that the iphone gets it correct every time, but the mac version is constantly getting confused.
