You may find this third-party product (for example) of interest:
- CATALYST® CASE FOR APPLE WATCH
- " Introducing the first of its kind, a fully functional, award winning, waterproof case for Apple watch. "
- " Our water rating is suitable for .. surface swimming "
- " All features fully functional including heart rate sensors " [see my comment below]
- " IP-68 Waterproof: Every unit tested 5ATM (165ft / 50m)* " [see their explanation]
Note: this is not a recommendation - be sure to perform your own due diligence.
Also keep in mind that:
- The screen would not function normally (in terms of touch sensitivity) under water.
- Should the case fail, your watch may become damaged and ineligible for warranty service (Apple advises that the watch should not be worn when swimming).

Aug 29, 2016 10:29 AM in response to shellylucasby stevejobsfan0123,The Apple Watch is water resistant and is capable of getting wet. It just should not be submerged or exposed to water for extended periods of time.
This article may help: About Apple Watch water resistance - Apple Support. The Apple Watch has a water resistance rating of IPX7, which means it can be in up to 3 feet (1 meter) of water for a short time (the shorter, the better).
The tradeoff if you get a waterproof case is that they tend to be rather bulky. I don't blame you if you want to get one, though, so here is one I found with good reviews: https://www.amazon.com/CATALYST®-CASE-APPLE-WATCH-42mm/dp/B018ONMDN6.
